Can you imagine this guy has spent his whole life coding and still looks at the keyboard when he types. Carmack is human!

What an awesome experience to watch him live code & do Q&A. That's me at 58:00 asking about Vulkan.

I've seen so many Carmack vids going back to the 90's but oddly I'd never seen him actually code until now. Don't know if i was expecting some 300 words per minute typing but something mesmerizing happens watching Carmack type :)

The ending is weird and awesome the same time! I remember reading on Masters Of Doom that Carmack was kinda cold and antisocial guy, but it seems to be the most polite human being on earth.

Wish I could watch John work everyday
he should just livestream his coding, Id watch it 24/7. Such a GOD amongst mere mortals when it comes to code.

Watching this man code while providing commentary is pure sex.

I am a game programmer. It is nice to see that even the great programmers sometimes have to code by trying. :D

I'm of the mind that Carmack was really on to something here - a quick way to make VR apps. Not sure why the powers-that-be decided against it, because this is the kind of thing that VR really needed - especially at that time (and even now). Now we have Unity/Unreal for devs to make games, but I feel like there's room for an engine that's even better suited specifically for VR - and *making games in VR*, which is where the money is at. When I'm finished with my existing project I plan to port a bunch of my last game engine - an OpenGL multiplayer procedurally generated affair (which I spent 3 years writing after learning how to write game engines for 20 years) to a super lean Vulkan engine that's designed specifically for users to make and share their own games with on the Quest, and probably PCVR too. This is what VR needs.

Carmack inspires me to try and excel at anything I try to do. Such a passionate and driven guy, high up on my role models list

When Carmack talks about his son I can't help but wonder if he'll be one of the future pioneers of VR, you know, a far future 20+ years or less. You know what they say, the pupil surpasses the master, so I hope Carmack teaches Carmack Jr. everything he needs to know to make the future of VR epicly awesome!

You were all right about that ending being neat. It was more than neat; it was special. I thought he was going to treat us with some VR Doom I, but we got so much more. Thank you John for the always-entertaining and thought-provoking lectures. Thank you for letting us into your mind for an hour. :)

Watching john check the IP address twice makes me feel so much less stupid when I constantly do it.

Pretty interesting and nice for iterating having the script executed on the pc and communicating over tcp. He mentioned running the script on the phone itself later, I wonder what the performance penalty there might be there.

I would love to watch King Carmack program Doom VR with his 11 year old (now 14?) Prince Carmack.
