sorry for yelling lol templates here:

If they’re hiring for your role:

Hi [their name],

My name is [your name], I’m a [expertise] with [# years of experience].

I’m reaching out to put a face to an application. I recently applied for the open [Role] position and am very, very interested in the role.

If there is anything I can do to strengthen my application, please let me know.

Thank you so much!

If they’re not hiring for your role:

Hi [their name],

My name is [your name], I’m a [expertise] with [# years of experience].

I’m reaching out to see if you’re looking to hire a [role] either now or in the future. If so, I’d love to be considered.

Do you know if an open [role] position is on the horizon? If so, I certainly want to put my name in the hat.

Thank you so much!

I’ve done this with mixed results. A lot of confused responses, many redirecting me to the appropriate process for application and on rare occasions interested hiring people

This generally works for smaller companies and I’ve gotten jobs this way, however, in larger corporations and with much higher paying jobs, there are usually required posting and multiple interviews to jump through. Don’t be discouraged but do be aware.

was super anxious about cold emailing the ceo of this company i wanted to work for because i thought it'd be rude. this made me want to stop putting it off and go for it. thank you!!

This is the modern day equivalent of when boomers say " just go on and ask for the manger" it's the same concept only adjusted for modern times

It’s worth a shot! I’ve filled out hundreds of job applications and it hasn’t gotten me far at all. Why not go this route. Thanks Erin!

I used your strategy the other day in an interview where they asked, "what's your salary expectations"

I told them, I am actively interviewing and the market rate is x-x...of course if you are offering more that would be fantastic.

Dude smiled and said we can work with that

I’ve done that. They just tell me to fill out an application on the website

I got every job I ever had through "networking." I put it in quotes because it sounds so corporate, but none of these were corporate jobs. It also helps to be good at whatever job you get, and be nice to people. I was a hard worker at a part-time movie theater job, one of the few people there who took it seriously. So when a coworker heard of an opening at her other part-time job (unrelated to movie theater work), she recommended me even though I had no experience, just because I was pleasant to work with and hard working. And that turned into a full-time career that's lasted 18 years now.

I emailed the president of my current job in 2021 for an internship. They didn't have any vacancies but they liked my portfolio and experience. Fast forward 2023, left my previous job and took a gap year. Got bored so I emailed them again and got hired as analyst. I only talked to one company. All it took was for someone to refer the company to me.

I got a new job recently with a great salary. I’ve learned a lot over the years from your videos and I want to say thank you! You rock!

I used to do this after graduation. Didn't work. Didn't help. I kept sending resumes and filling out applications and doing interviews until I landed my first job after college.

Great advice. I referred my buddy to my company and got a thousand dollar bonus :) After that experience, I'm way more open to referring people now! It's a win-win for everyone.

There is so much to be said for contacts, personal referrals, and just making the effort to reach out on your own. A face and a personal message is going to stand out amongst the sea of resumes.

This is true!!! After a year of job searching I just started cold calling places and I got an interview the day after and I got hired a day after that!

Thanks, Erin! I did this with my last job. After 3 months of follow-up emails and interviews, I was hired, and then they laid me off 6 weeks later, stating lack of work (dix). I was so grateful that the pay helped pay the bills until I got my current job.

Idk why more people don’t do this, but in kind of glad they don’t. Makes it easier for those that do.

This is how I got my first job out of college! Granted, I had already worked as an undergrad intern at the company a couple years prior, but before I even sent out a single application anywhere else, I emailed my old supervisor asking if they needed any assistance and saying I was willing to get any certifications necessary to take a role. I got called in for an interview and offered a job within the week. Stayed there for three years before moving on!

I needed this advice when I started looking for a career.

You do a great job with these shorts.

Wouldn't most companies you try this with just tell you to apply online?
