There's a new Steam Deck mod out there and it's upgrading RAM from 16gb to 32gb! This is an extremely difficult process only for experts! Would you upgrade your RAM?

I just wanna see footage of the upgraded deck in action to see if having more ram actually shows any improvement.

I can see where the upgrade to 16 to 32GB can be very beneficial if you want to up the frame buffer from 4gb to 8gb which could be useful in some games. Also it could also help in some CPU bound situations where the CPU would need more memory. Also this mod reminds me of the mod of the OG Xbox where users upgraded their xbox's RAM from 64mb to 128mb which was very useful in the arcade emulation scene it helped the OG Xbox play them higher end arcade games.

The Steam Deck's memory is system shared. So basically you can set your VRAM to 4GB and still have enough RAM.

32gb of ram could actually be a bit of a game changer for the Steam Deck. Because it has 16gb, but thats shared memory. If you set the frame buffer to 4gb for VRAM than you really only have 12 gbs of ram. Maybe I'm incorrect, but i imagine 32gb of shared memory and being able to allocate 8gb or even 12gb of VRAM could allow for a smoother experience.

If you can change the vram bios settings to be 8GB, I think it could give you a good performance boost for games that require more video memory.

the ram is split between the cpu ang gpu and at default settings the deck favors the cpu to get the lions share whenever it needs it and setting it to 4gs helps in some games like 7days to die you can bump up the graphics but it hurts others like at least for me the dead-space remake went from bad lag spike to well worse I imagine it would give more headroom as long as the deck knows how to use it and not just know that its there but I know little about tech just enough to get into trouble

I didnt think i wanted this till i tried to play heavily modded Minecraft on the deck...wont even make a world without running out of ram

Most games released today are ram hungry. I think this could help more than we think

All i want is valve to release a board with upgraded apu like a custom z1 extreme and just replace the steamdeck with it. That would be huge W for sustainability.

You were not far off of putting Balázs on the map. However, instead of Turkey, he is from Hungary.

Kinda an unrelated topic but Honestly this needs more attention. The steam deck has a huge issue with getting a black screen where device works but the screen just doesn’t. Everyone on reddit is reporting this issue and all valve does is replace it than actually do something to fix this issue. I wasn’t lucky they wanted to charge me 145 to fix the deck even though it’s they’re fault for the faulty hardware.

Hey man just wondered if you could move the mic a bit closer to your mouth?

There are already a ton of games that require 16gb of ram in order to play and the number will only go up.. I see this mod as future proofing without the need to constantly find modded exe files to play newer games

32GB could be nice for unoptimized games. PC has no shortage of them. Your Deck would absolutely benefit in Horizon 0 Dawn with 32GB RAM, that's for sure

But other than that, upgrading RAM would just be over kill. 16gb is still the standard for gaming. We're not at a point where games are demanding more than 16gb or anywhere near that level. I doubt there'd be any noticeable differences with upgrading RAM size. Maybe getting even better RAM cards could make a slight difference?

can't know if it's worth it until it gets sent to LTT and they make a teardown and performance test vid

The stuffs i wanna upgrade the most is screen, soon to be deckHD (sadly ain't 120hz), ram to be double, and if someone ever makes it, good beefy speakers as the speakers it has sounds kinda lackluster on the bass/middle tone (got bitten by iphone and ipad speakers)

Учитывайте то, что все упирается не в оперативную память в Steamdeck, а пропускную способность
Итог: это бессмысленно

an unnecessary upgrade, I will prefer a OLED 800p Screen and also an easy replaceable battery maybe a mod on the back

What we need are better optimized games like Resident Evil remake 2 and 3 which Run at very high settings 60 FPS once shaders are installed 👍
