I think the problem comes partly from the fact that a lot of us have been following advice from a previous generation of psychologists, who taught that the key to attraction and the essence of relationship success was more communication, progressive self-disclosure and a deeper understanding of each other. Based on such advice, the proper response to her backing away or her losing interest seemed to be to seek clarification and press for the opportunity to ''talk it through'' and address any problems through open discussion. That often had the effect of pushing the ''relationship'' into crisis mode before there was really much of a relationship.
