'Influencer's' Dangerous Airplane Advice

Plane crash survivor here. I'm incredibly grateful I put my head down. Not only did it contribute to the "survivor" part of being a plane crash survivor, but it also helped shield my 15-month-old daughter during impact. She was traveling in my lap. She, too survived. Listen to your pilot and crew.

Not to mention, if that position was designed to kill you, that could be proved and if it was proved, that would be multiple lawsuits FAR, FAR bigger than anything we have seen. Multiple airlines would be sued into oblivion and multiple people responsible for those policies would go to jail. The airlines would be risking far more with a position designed to kill you.

As an actual aviation maintenance tech, that second tiktok really made me angry. What a huge pack of lies. We check EVERYTHING on that plane at set intervals determined by the FAA and each manufacturer/buyer (airline/cargo company/etc). The emergency oxygen system has expiration dates, as does every piece of emergency equipment. Maintenance swaps them out for new if one expires. Yes. We keep track. And deferrals are only allowed for certain items, and many have restrictions set in, which are all determined for safety reasons. These "influencers" really annoy me how dangerous their misinformation can be.

My uncle survived the East Midlands BMA crash because he followed the instructions of professionally trained crew.
Safety on aircraft is so advanced these days that most people survive the crash; it's what they do after that kills them.
I'm. a frequent flyer but I ALWAYS follow the safety instructions/video. Muscle memory plays a part too; many people can't get out of their seats because they are busy pressing the seat belt release; it's lift and separate. When you are stressed, you won't necessarily figure that out.

A long time ago, my husband was on a flight and the captain refused to take off. It was a small plane, so he came into the cabin and apologized for the delay. He said it was going to be a while because of the paperwork, that it was something easy enough to fix, but he will not fly until it will be taken care of. Safe to say passengers (my husband included) where happy to wait. So, yes, if the captain feels that is not safe, they just don't fly. BTW, congrats on your promotion.

Mainntenance here:

The oxygen masks and "PSU" (passenger service units) get looked over every C-check.

The masks get their oxygen from "oxygen generators" or "candles" that get activated when you give a strong jerk to the strings that deploy with the masks.

Typical arrangement is 3 masks (seats) per candle.


The candles have a shelf life. They get recycled or otherwise disposed regularly.

I was on a plane where the flaps failed. I learned that same day what flaps are for. If we didn’t listen to the flight crew, I believe that there would be a few injuries on the flight. Especially spinal injuries. Our necks are not created to bounce back and forth and side to side with extreme force. The flight attendants also told us to raise our seatbelt as high as possible and buckle up tight. Had anyone not done that, it too would have caused an injury of some sort. The landing that day was extremely hard and fast and my waist had a few bruises from the seatbelt but the pilots did an amazing job with landing safely and keeping the people calm. They acted as if it was a simple problem, they deal with every day. I don’t know how serious it really was because the crew were so calm and knowledgeable.

Hypoxia is seriously scary. It’s like being drunk but you have no reason to realize you’re drunk because you didn’t have anything. Then your brain just loses all sense of danger and you just let yourself die even if you could easily save yourself.
