The BEST Way to Plant a Tree

Whether you’re wanting a peach tree or any other tree, this is how I plant a tree. Planting isn't complicated, but a few crucial steps ensure your tree will have a long, healthy life. If planted incorrectly the signs of a suffering tree sometimes don’t show up for 5-10 years. That's why planting the tree correctly today makes all the difference.

------------------------------

Here's the process:

- Dig a hole two times the size of the tree container. This ensures the ground around the root ball is broken up and makes it easier for the roots to grow and accept water.
- Remove the tree from the container.
- Expose the root flare. This ias at the base of the tree trunk where the trunk begins to “flare” or spread out and form roots. When the root flare is covered up with dirt, moisture and rot can begin to slowly suffocate the tree.
- Break up any circling roots. Trees grown in containers tend to have roots that circle the container as they grow. To encourage them to grow laterally out into the ground, break them up.
- Water the hole before adding dirt. This helps ensure the ground is well moistened, helping it accept future waterings easier.
- Set the tree in the prepared hole. Keep the root flare above the ground.
- Add the removed ground back around the tree and tamp it down slightly. If you're wanting to amend with compost manure, use up to 50% of the amendment mixed with the native soil. If there's too much amendment mixed in, the roots will not want to leave the area!
- Water deeply, using about 5-10 gallons of water. This also removes any pockets of air in the soil. Continue to water throughout the growing season until the tree is dormant. Just FYI: you need at least 1 inch of rain to count as a watering.

THANK YOU! for showing the correct way to plant a tree. People all over the world -- including landscapers -- don't first identify the root flare and plant it a grade level, and then they volcano mulch it. It takes a landscaper less time to not identify the root flare, and then he sells you more mulch than necessary and piles it up around the trunk. Because the tree will wither, the landscaper can charge for telling you it was that freeze last year, or a bug from Madagascar, or the drought two years ago, or some other claptrap, when in fact the tree withers because of improper planting. Finally, the landscaper will sell you another tree when yours finally dies.

Wow. I didn't know there could be inches of soil above the root flare of a tree in a container. Thank you!

I am doing a thing with Roots Nashville getting free trees into neighborhoods I have shared this video with the folks receiving the trees because I appreciate how you not only show the steps but explain the whys. Thank you for educating us on proper gardening techniques.

Remember that if you have 10mph wind or more, a tree with leaves of this size will flop over if planted in this way. You would want 3 posts, about 5ft tall and sturdy, with a couple thick rope loops going around the trunk from each post. Doesn't need to be super tight or anything, just enough to make sure it doesn't tip over.

Good video. I would add that it is wise to look for trees with root flares that are not buried deep in the pot before you make a purchase. Trees with buried trunks are prone to rot. Unburying the trunk may prevent this but too often the damage is done. The newly exposed trunk will crack and rot in winter. I prefer to tease out the roots with a hook and try to avoid cutting them.

Great video! I mix about a third of the native soil with coconut husk. It holds more water and air than rockwool! I used to add compost too but now I am going to try to rely just on fertilizers. Which one is the best for fruit trees?
