Even if I was the last speaker it wouldn't change my drive towards keeping ocitan alive, it probably would make it stronger and put greater responsabilities on my shoulders to pass it down through generations and around me to people willing to learn it. Because it's not just a language, it's a culture, a society, the history of the occitans, a spirituality, the history of christianity and a part of human history. That's why it lives on and will keeping living on for a very long time, after all that's been done to destroy it, people were shamed for speaking it, it was forbidden in school and kids were punished for speaking occitan, if that's not persecution I don't know what you call it. And I wouldn't change anything of what happenned, if not for the pain and suffering that past generations had to endure. It was a liberation for people born in the 20th century to cut off the tranmission and to get rid of it to the point where they were scared of teaching it to their children, because they thought that then the brutality towards us would finally stop, but it's still there in lesser forms, we're still looked down on, wether we speak it or not.
