On October 27, 2016, some of Toronto’s greatest thinkers and change-makers joined together onstage at TEDxToronto to deliver powerful talks and performances that embodied our theme, Symbols + Signals.

Born in Tanzania and raised in Canada, Nick Saul is President and CEO of Community Food Centres Canada, a national organization that builds and supports vibrant, food-focused community centres in low-income neighbourhoods. These centres are based on the idea that good food is a powerful force for greater health, equity and social change.

He is a recipient of the prestigious Jane Jacobs Prize, as well as an honorary doctorate from Ryerson University. A long-time community organizer, Nick speaks regularly on issues of justice and the Community Food Centre model of food access, health and community building.

The way we frame a problem determines the kind of solution we get. Well said.

That applause at the end was the most justified one I've witnessed so far in my life.

At the root of hunger is the fact that 77% of fertile land is beeing used to produce feed for farm animals that are beeing eaten by only 19% of the population.

I believe as you say we need long term systemic planning to eradicate hunger. That being said while we bring about change that will help for the long term we cannot ignore that today and everyday this year 17, 000 children will die of hunger. 13.1 Million children will die this year of starvation or easily treatable diseases, like diarrhea, cholera etc. I have done work in Africa, South America, North America. In South America, and Africa many people live hours of walking from a store. When they do get to a store there is no food for sale. They do not have enough land to grow all of their food. The average person I met in these areas outside the cities ate once every two days. So please do not ignore the short term. thank your for your thoughts.

Thank you very much for your vision of ending hunger worldwide. If many politicians explore your ideas, the change will be achieved soon. Congratulations on your speech!

I lived with friends in their impoverished homes either as roommates or with their family. They’d waste hundreds a month. After ending up homeless I started saving became all my money was towards the cheapest healthiest food instead of just a bunch of microwave foods

I havent watched the video yet but here is my take. If there wasnt no hunger, people would have even more children, and find the limit again. So basically some people will always be hungry.

Pastures in Texas are turning into neighborhoods. So less crops and more people. The government pays farmers to destroy crops to control stock prices. All these pastures use to grow crops, and cattle. Food was harvested in every pasture. It ended in the 1980s.

Mama gave him life and he claimed dominion over the womb. Mama gave him seed and he made profits from the fruit. Every gift Mama has given him he squanders worshipping himself for life his Mama gave him. He who comes against Mama made himself his own enemy, like the hungry serpent who eats his own tail. He who loves his Mama is rich with love for his wife and children. When he awakens there will be fruit again.

You mentioned how Glenn's family didn't value education; what I understand then is that if they did value education, Glenn would've led a different life. So, to fix hunger and poverty we need to get people to value education, correct?

Too late, maybe. We've seen this over and over again. Today, four and a half years after this talk, people in the CDR, Bolivia, Mexico, the Middle East, Guatemala, Brazil, Haiti, Burkina-Faso... maybe 80% of Africa's population is not only malnourished, but well under the limits of utter poverty. I rescue dogs, because that's all I can do. If I had the power and the money, I'd be rescuing children, women, men, the elderly, from famine, wars, despicable acts created by the powers to be. We're losing the war not because we're neglecting the poor in the wealthiest of all countries. We're losing the war because we've lost our moral compass.
