The amount of good food we waste would fit into 23 million fully-loaded 40-tonne trucks.

And if these trucks were lined up bumper-to-bumper, then the queue would be long enough to circle the Earth seven times.

Why do we waste so much food and what can we do about it? The BBC's Aaron Heslehurst explains.

1. Freez it before it goes bad and then use it for animal feed 2. make an app that posts food waste to earn points for coupons or free data minutes 3. Turn it into long lasting products like cheese cooked meals and dried fruit and pickled vegetables

I remember homeless guys being arrested for taking good food that Iceland threw in skips, behind their shops. Iceland's owners did everything they could to ensure they were charged & sent to court.
Food waste that they don't want & you can't have, go hungry.

I’m a bin man and we chuck our food waste in a big warehouse after collecting about 4 - 8 ton of food waste a day.

I always think of food, am a food lover, love my food, but don’t waste food, no leftovers, I cook the required amount and drink plenty of water.

Waste food is disgraceful.
In China 🇨🇳 we have a ancient poem called “The Peasant's Lot “.
Hoeing the grass under the noonday sun,
His sweat drips on the ground beneath.
Who knows that on the dining plate,
Every single grain means hardship.

What about these people living in these blocks of flats like battery hens. They have no garden space. So how can they make compost?
You would need a new set of bins just for food waste.

Wasting perfectly good food is disgraceful.. there are still so many people in this world that die of hunger every day! My Grandpa used to tell me and it's a common saying in our society "waste food today and you will go hungry tomorrow".

Everything is boiling down to overpopulation and inequality. I live in a rich country, and I know there are refugees worldwide who want to be here. I can’t blame them for trying, but I’m concerned that one day I’ll be a refugee in my own homeland.

Normalise communal eating, make space for it, and publicly fund it. Good for preventing food waste, good for the local community, good for treating the pandemic of loneliness, particularly in older people.

The nhs provide three, three course meals a day to each patient…..most is wasted yet we’re fired on the spot for eating so much as a stale roll!! I wanted one (a STALE, out of date bread roll) for my soup, was just opening it, a nurse came in and demanded I put it into the bin stating “ I was lucky not to have taken a bite”! Not to mention the sandwiches, cakes, biscuits, cheese crackers, yoghurt provided to patients too! Most of that ends up in the bin too! Patients will order a three course meal too…..”might as well mum, it’s free” is the attitude of the relatives. It put the food out in front of them and half hour later, untouched, I take it all away and scrape it into the bin! Thirty patients in my ward, two wards to each floor, nine floors! That’s not counting cardiology, children’s, maternity, psychology! Could start there as there are thousands of hospitals and the waste is the same! When you have a system of waste like that every mealtime and people ordering and providing too much you’ll never stop the problem! Food is plenty for mans need, not mans GREED

here in Australia we have ozharvest and second bite, where food that is about to expire in grocery stores are sent to a volunteer cook up place which is then distributed to the homeless.

Richard and the BBC should keep putting Tories in power would be my suggestion. Food banks and soup kitchens are much better at getting food used efficiently.

When I was growing up few decades ago, two things were essentials in a middle class household, a fridge, a Television, that would put you in a upper middle class scale, fancifully everything went inside the fridge, then stocking it became a priority, refrigerating batters, leftover food for weeks and months became a necessity, it not only encouraged laziness, but also resulted in negating the general health of people. The gases used for refrigeration depleted the ozone layer, imagine what it can do to ordinary people who took it out, heated in a microwave and ate it.I don’t refrigerate anything, it’s a waste in my house, I cook fresh food .Sometimes it’s a blessing in disguise to not have gadgets, electronics, appliances at home, encourages you to eat clean, rather have stale, old food.
