Jon Kabat-Zinn on the practicalities of starting a meditation practice, being fully present with no agenda, and letting go of “the story of me.” In this episode we talk about:
• The nitty gritty practicalities of starting a practice
• How he’s learned to be more relaxed about his practice—including advocating for meditating in bed
• How to practice being fully present with no agenda
• How investigating your motivations—something most people don’t do— can help you be more mindful
• How to practice letting go of “the story of me”

Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, is professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Back in the 1970s, he came up with something called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, or MBSR, which is a secular way of teaching Buddhist meditation. He’s written many books, including Full Catastrophe Living; Wherever You Go, There You Are; and Coming to Our Senses. His latest book is called Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief.

"Your only alive in this breath. And if you were drowning or under water all that would matter is this breath. " best quote zinn has ever made.

Fantastic interview. Dan is so open to learning from a man who impacted healthcare and changed how western medicine practices care of patients. He scientifically proved the value of holistic Healthcare. 🎉🎉❤🏥

2:22 and 13:20. Yes...this is my relationship to a 25 year practice. May everyone who wishes it, develop this relationship to their practice. Thanks as always, Dan🙏

Jon has definitely influenced my ability to endure rough patches, especially during the pandemic when I decided to remain working with the public and accept whatever was to come.

At about thirty years of age, I was lucky enough to experience a taste of getting what everyone else said I should want and that it would "fix" my awkwardness in the world.
When arriving at that normal status and seeing I still had to live with my mind, it was too much and I began to drink hard and fast.

The gratitude comes of having given up entirely, not dying, and then finding a way to start from scratch with curiosity and creativity.
Slowly the presence of my personal God became felt and heard.

There's still a long way to go because I also now understand that what I've been carrying is not just of my own circumstance in 56 years, but also the misapprehensions of those I've been in historical relation with.

Sounds heavy, but knowing it isn't all about me, alone, being terribly inept and misaligned, releases a good deal of shame.

Nice chat.

Wonderful interview and wonderful guest - takes us on a whole new level of the spiritual life and what meditation practice could bring us to.... the potential.... I so much appreciated and appreciate Jon Kabat-Zinn - from way back and he is continually transforming via his own work on himself and sharing it with us. What a gem and what a gift. Thank you Dan Harris for this interview and other interviews that you have done. I will listen to this again for sure and really listen!! Namaste 🙏💕🌿

I have to say as a real beginner meditator. This was a really great podcast as it can feel a little overwhelming and confusing at first for a newbie who has a bird-brain attention span, like myself. There seems to be so many meditation techniques out there especially when you're just trying to get a hang of the very basics (have signed up for the Ten Percent app). I think I'll just focus on my breath and my foggy rambling mind for the moment 😅

Thanks! Great to see Jon's interview and hear his perspective and wisdom. I emphasized Mindfulness in my graduate studies getting a PsyD and cited Jon's work numerous times in my dissertation. All that said, what I've always been intuitively drawn to, whether in practice or in teaching others about Mindfulness, is it's simplicity. I've been very consciously intentional in this regard in fact, as we live in a world that's plenty complex enough, and our ego's love to make things more complicated than they need to be....so, I see one facet of Mindfulness practice as a sacred opportunity to get out of that complexity orientation, utilizing the breath as the vehicle to anchor to the present moment. Would love to dialogue more if an opportunity presents. Blessings in practice 🙏

I love Kabat-Zinn but I have to admit to feeling really uncomfortable about Dan barely getting a word in. I am sure it was fine with Dan, indeed John asks about this at one point just before launching again into a monologue (a very inspiring monologue) but I felt (rightly or wrongly) a bit of discomfort for Dan and then when Dan did finally get to speak (and this is probably my own sensitivity here) I just wished John could have just heard him and included IN what Dan said rather than kind of making it wrong. So Dan admits to meditating in bed and then hears that if he had more ' governance' he would get out of bed and sit. Dan refers to people getting into the ' habit' of meditating and is told that 'habit' is the wrong way to look at this. Then Dan refers to this as 'a meditation practice' only to be corrected again with John calling it a "formal meditation practice" ! I just felt distracted by this and kind of sad that in such an inspiring monologue about JUST BEING that Kabat-Zinn couldn't just include Dan IN just as he IS without feeling a need to jump in to correct him and in a way that says "that's not quite right", when I feel that 'habit' or not, in bed or not Dan GETS BEING :O) I loved the Pema New Year interview which felt to me the perfect balance /dance between Dan and Pema with Pema being so humble and I LOVED the 'door mat' moment, I laughed so much about that one and just LOVED the way that Pema can laugh at herself. So thank you John/Pema AND Dan for bringing so much inspiration for living to life x

''Whether it's Hamas and Palestinians in off like bandits''. WTF! In this and other videos he only points the finger at one side. Never mentions the ongoing genocide of women and children by ISRAEL. Sorry but neither mindfulness or yoga has diminished his self serving attitude. Whether because he's a jew or his business empire needs Israeli support I don't know. Perhaps he should meditate on it.
