Shauna Rae may look like a child, but she desperately wants to be treated like an adult. I Am Shauna Rae follows Shauna as she navigates the extraordinary challenge of trying to live a normal adult life despite her appearance. Diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer at six months old, Shauna’s treatment allowed for remission, but resulted in a side effect no one predicted – she stopped growing. The chemotherapy made her pituitary gland almost dormant, leaving Shauna with a childlike appearance and standing at only 3 feet and 10 inches tall-- the average size of an 8-year-old. Except, Shauna is 22.

Even her family kind of talks to her and treats her like a bit of a child

It’s difficult to envision her as an adult when she looks and sounds like a child. This has to be a really sad reality. It’s great she has a supportive loving family, but you can definitely tell they still baby her.

Kids are drawn to her because she's like the coolest kid ever. They see that she looks similar to them but she's able to interact with adults on an equal level.

I can’t imagine living like this honestly. The weirdos she must attract is probably insane, plus dealing with little boys who might have a crush on her..I just feel for her a lot 😭

Her family talks to her like a little kid. The way her mom walked with her to the edge of the water and was like "go ahead, go on" in a tone you'd use for a child, and then the way they were all cheering for her. Maybe it's not intentional on their part, but I am wondering if Shauna'a psychological/developmental maturity is on par with a 22 year old? She's definitely more mature than a child, but she also doesn't quite act like an adult, either. I'm sure it's hard to hit emotional milestones though when you look and sound like a child, are treated that way, and spent chunks of your life in the hospital.

If people started cheering for me while flying a kite I'd throw the kite on the sand lol. That's a very "yay kid, good job, kid!!!" vibe.

I mean she’s treated just the way she looks— like an 8 year old child. She’s a 22 year old woman, and her family’s talking to her in baby voices, telling her what to do and hovering over her. I feel for shauna.

It hadn’t even occurred to me about other kids thinking she’s a kid. Now I imagine other kids asking if she’d like to help build a sandcastle, and she be like “nah I just wanna enjoy beer.”

Honestly I think the people cheering her on the beach was a pretty heartfelt moment, I like nowadays how people actually just try to cheer each other on instead of making fun of others or completely ignoring everyone's existence we never hang out like a community anymore so little moments like this is nice
