All Websites Look the Same?

Are all websites starting to look like clones of each other? Is it that even a bad thing? In today's video, I address these pressing questions.

In my opinion, at the end of the day, businesses and users want websites that get the job done. Websites that help them achieve their goals, whether that is finding and purhasing a product or finding and reading some information. We call this "functional".

Users have gotten used to the standard website layout and they get thrown off easily when we deviate away. If you're a business, you are most definitely not going to risk losing a potential customer just to have a few fancy interactions and edgy composition.

Let me know yor thoughts on this exciting topic in the comments below!

Several years ago people were excited to enter a website and be surprised by a good design, because online content was a novelty. I remember bookmarking sites in my browser just because they looked good, even though I couldn't even remember their content. Nowadays people are already used to using the web so they want to navigate and quickly find what they need. So yeah, web design is getting boring.

One of the early things I learned was 'form follows function' so you have to ask yourself first what is the purpose of a website? To inform. To inspire. To solve a problem. Once this is established the form follows ie. the elements of the website that deliver the function. That's why a lot of websites look the same.

I agree about the structure and layout of the website staying the same, but the website should still have design aspects or branding to make it look unique. Most websites I look at look cookie cutter.

This is called "Jakob's Law".

100% agree. Trends != usability. A house needs a door and a website needs a hero. Then we can design the door or the hero, but it has to be there.

The comments about users expecting the same functionality and experience is pretty much spot on. Especially when it comes to ecommerce sites when it would be of no practical use for a designer to change the way the user would purchase an item.

Wondeful content! Im always worried that the websites i make are too simple. But when making a simple website for someone should i be charging a basic price or how can i add additional value to justify paying a premium price?

Yes, but I doubt this will go on much longer, at least I hope not. People are starting to get really tired of everything looking so over simplified. There was even a recent trend where people were just pumping out video after video about how tired they are of everything being so flat. I do wonder how things will change in the future, and when things will get more original again.

I think we need design research labs, purely made for scientific research, avant-garde ideas & testing. Like how professional Michelin star chefs research and test new recipes in "cooking labs".

Ran love your channel, and love the updates you do on Instagram, but please do a pharma or Drug website! I loved the wedding website updated, but I'd love to see something more complex and difficult.

Functionality comes first before the visual thing and all of these things you said are right man. For me, when it comes to design I always prioritize the functionality first and because I like art and it's creativity a lot, then I make the visual things beautiful as much as possible regarding with it's feel and the aesthetic part of it. For me, when it comes to design, first of all, the approach or pattern for functionality must stay or gradually change for the sake of innovation and to serve the needs of the users and then when it comes to the aesthetic part, there must be an innovation to create changes and progress because it will be boring to always live in that same kind of approach when it comes to designing and for me "creativity" is the core of designing so there must be always changes in approach of designing things to create beautiful designs.

So I don't buy that everything has to look the same to be navigable or to be a non-frustrating, user-friendly experience. I think it's just laziness and that most people are using the same libraries and not really creating their own code anymore. The vast majority of the sites that "look the same" are using bootstrap and following the same grid system. It has nothing to do with user-friendliness or as other people in the comments suggested things like form following function. It's because people aren't being creative, are reusing the same lines of code in the same ways, and overall value creating a quick and easy website over one that actually innovates. That's it, period.
