10 Things ANYONE Can Do To Get Better At Guitar Faster

In April, we put together a totally sarcastic video about the ten things you could do to get better at the guitar faster. But since it was April 1st, the entire video was a joke. None of the things listed in that lesson would have helped you. In fact, they would have greatly hurt your progress.

So in this video, we’ll clear the air and talk about the ten things you can actually do to see results at a quicker pace. This includes working on your timing, learning songs, fixing mistakes, playing with other people, learning the notes on the fretboard, and more. Be sure to watch the video to get the full list of tips!

Hopefully, you’ll come away from this guitar lesson with at least a few tricks for improving your practice time. If you’re a keener and you implement all ten of these “things”, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your playing in just a few days!

Tip: End your practice on a positive, where you have learned something correctly and played it well. Don't end when you are frustrated about the session.

At just 4 minutes in I realized this video is extremely underrated and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this gem.

I know this may sound kind of silly but I started a little "Positive Music Thoughts" journal. Whenever I feel frustrated or down I write down what I have accomplished recently with my playing and other positive things. Whenever I start getting down on myself about my playing I open up that journal, read the last entry and then write down something I got better at since then. Inevitably I have gotten better at something since the last entry. The more positive you feel about your playing the more often you'll play and the more confidence you'll have.

You just called me out on a few things I’ve done and now I understand why I haven’t gone any further with playing.

A few pieces of advice that I've learned, some of them don't really fit in a technique video but I'd give them away for free to anyone who'd care to listen:
1. I've been playing for a little less than a year and a half. I started at 37. 37 years old. Seriously. I'm 39 now. Playing in church, and I love it. Piece of advice number one? To paraphrase a Chinese Proverb, the best time to start was 20+ years ago. The second best time to start is now.
2. Find something you enjoy hearing that is slightly above your skill level. Play up, not down, if you want to grow. I started with the opening riff to Long Cool Woman. Fun, achievable, and I keep coming back to it.
3. Find something you enjoy hearing/playing that you can reliably come back to and play well, so that when you're frustrated at the difficulty of learning something new you can relieve the tension by playing something that you know you can play well.
4. Bonus: have fun. It's called playing guitar, not working guitar. Play. Not that it's all fun all the time, but it should be a net fun experience. If it isn't then you're probably pushing yourself too hard and need to relax a bit before you burn out.

one thing i like doing is to record myself playing a cover song with the original song as backing track and it helped me learn to play in time

I’ve been practicing the guitar for nearly 4 years mostly independently, all I can do now is to play songs with the chords in front of me. Glad I found this video Hopefully I can play a songs just by listening to it one day🙏 still waiting for ma breakthrough.

Great advice.

One thing I like to do is to work on chord changes and strumming by playing through the chords of each key, or playing a key in all dominate seven chords, or playing keys in alternate voicings.

Tried your timing exercise and realized how bad my timing was (which is depressing given how much DJing and beat counting I've done in my life) but with just like 15 min of practicing I'm already getting better. It's really invigorating to start something new and see yourself getting better. Thank you!

My timing sucked until I started to make guitar-tutorials and did not want to be embarassed.

I just finished the video. I primarily played clarinet from 6-12g. My senior I was first chair clarinet, And I became drum major. I learned some percussion and brass parts, I got offered a full ride scholarship for being distinguished on my instrument. I also was in my band directors guitar class my senior year. Guitar 1, it was very intro. I stuck with it in and out. And learned a lot in band. My best tips are: learn fundamentals. They are so important. Hand placements and strumming techniques are good to learn, especially in rock, also in acoustic too. Learn how to tune without a tuner, or maybe just for the root (standard) E, and go from there! (The 5, 5, 5, 4, 5) .. I play rock primarily now. Scales are important, learn different genres- it helps sculpt who you want to be as a player. Follow your idols!!! Find out what brands they use and playing techniques, and tunings ! Also, RESEARCH THE ORIGINALS! Not just the artist you see today. Thanks so much for reading. Music is powerful! ❤️
