Is There a Problem With Godzilla?

Since it's inception, Godzilla has been responsible for binging in literal billions of dollars at the box office. Though, only a select few iterations of Godzilla have truly stood the test of time. But what exactly separates a good Godzilla movie from a bad one? How can different filmmakers lend their voice to bringing the iconic Godzilla to the big screen so many times?

Basically, The Monster Universe did the job DCEU failed to do.

I kinda like how the Monsterverse can pull off both grounded and serious and also dumb and fun, and they do both pretty well. The Godzilla franchise has always bounced between the two and I like that the Monsterverse respects both aspects of it's lore.

Bro thinks seeing Minus One automatically can become a Godzilla expert.

How many times are we going to see video essayists bad mouthing the MonsterVerse films just so they can prop up Minus One and claim that Godzilla should only be one thing? It's kind of getting annoying at this point. The Godzilla franchise has lasted this long because of it's versatility. We can have both versions.

Any Godzilla commentary that dismisses the Showa era is worthless.

The problem with Godzilla is we need MORE!

if you think that Godzilla cant be simultaneously goofy and serious within the same movie, then maybe the Kaiju genre as a whole really ain't for you

Anybody who says that godzilla can’t have both serious allegorical movies and goofy “big monster fight” movies should be immediately ignored, as their opinion holds no value.

Why are big YouTubers having awful Godzilla takes all of a sudden

Ok ngl I am getting sick and tired of people jumpin on the bandwagon of "monsterverse bad and minus one good" and "if godzilla movie isn't dark, then it isn't godzilla" sure you are allowed to no like the more goofy and chaotic movies... but saying it not godzilla... you clearly don't understand godzilla and why he's so special to us

Minus one I swear to god makes people think all of a sudden that it's the way to make all Godzilla movies. as
If I wanna watch the same movie with the same monster having the exact same themes on repeat for 70 years

Well not all Godzilla movies needs to have a deep meaning . The monster verse movies shouldn't be looked down on for being action blockbusters . Godzilla is a versatile franchise . It covers various topics, themes, genres and tones . We can enjoy a serious movie like Godzilla minus one and action packed movies from the monster verse . Just like people have been doing since the beginning of the franchise.

There is NO way this dude says Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla knows what it is but Godzilla vs kong *"Doesn't"* where do you get that implication? Can a movie not have stakes and also be fun????

Another let’s fix the monsterverse by making them grounded and metaphorical films video. It’s okay for the monsterverse to be fun and silly. Now i can see a point about them not being tonally consistent. But really I think the way to fix the monsterverse isn’t by making them these emotional intelligent films deconstructing politics or the human condition, but just by making more fun and interesting characters and compelling human stories. Also compelling doesn’t necessarily mean serious. So it’s possible to have likable characters and a fun silly movie

Oh for God's sake. Godzilla is a versatile character, he can be scary and serious or goofy and fun. Just because Minus One is the most globally successful recent Godzilla film shouldn't make it the end all be all of what the character should be.
He could be a defender of nature fighting a menagerie of monsters in one movie and be an allegorical mutant monstrosity in another. There shouldn't be an either-or at all with this conversation, even just looking at his film history shows that he's been flexible in his role for decades, yet people are ignoring everything else but the first film, the monsterverse, the recent Toho films, and the 1998 film. What about the rest of the Showa era, which sure can get goofy but still has a swathe of iconic moments and can occasionally have compelling human stories? Or how about the Heisei era which by comparison is far more serious and grounded despite the ridiculous things thar happen in it? Or the Millennium era which had a wide variety of tones?

How about acknowledge that 99% of the films in those eras were made by Japanese filmmakers and it isn't necessarily an American idea for Godzilla to be action orientated?

Hell even actual Godzilla fans don't care if he's portrayed as a villain or a hero. Because unlike other fictional characters like say Superman... *he's not a person.* When Superman kills someone or turns evil it's fundamentally wrong, but if Godzilla does that the fandom doesn't give a sh*t. They won't even if he's written as friend of humanity either... It's Godzilla, he's cool, _The End._

*Godzilla can be whatever, just accept that.*

I hate going on rants but when a bad take is a REALLY bad take I can't hold it in...

Not everything needs to be a fucking art house flick, these movies are good at what they do. giving us 100mil+ CGI budget action figure fights with a straight face. They suffer a little bit in post when they trim some of the "fat" and we lose context scenes for a shorter runtime. but over all these movies are exactly what Most Godzilla fans I know want, GODZILLA FIGHTING MONSTERS.

You have officially spoken as someone who is clearly not a Godzilla fan. Ask any fan and they’ll tell you that we are really excited and happy that we have both versions! In the past, there were distinct eras where Goji was either portrayed as extremely serious or overly campy. We love both equally and are now ecstatic that we get both in the same era!

This sort of overly-negative video from you guys is becoming a pattern. I’m one more away from unsubscribing.

It can be a serious movie and still be just about a big lizard and big ape.
