I thought this was kind of interesting that the devs made an entire set just for these few scenes of the campaign. Then again, it is meant to be an "older" version of Night City, so I guess it kind of makes sense. What do you think of the weird floating boxes?

if i remember correctly, it is because players used to hop over that tall fence when Alt got kidnapped, and run off as Johnny in NC.
that was (again, iirc) before 2.0
so they copied up a version to throw us into so that even if you found a way out of the ally outside the Hammer, you couldn't actually run around the 2077 city.

the reason those structures are there is because when you are about to walk thru that doorway as Johnny ( 'interlude' ) you start way back in the back of that area, spinning (do a barrel roll style) as you move to the door. i've noticed it every time i get there XD (probably because i have my gamma a little higher than i should, but my monitor is old lol) the shapes kinda glint as you move thru the area. it's supposed to look like Johnny surfacing from the chip into your head i think.

the weird boxes behind the door are from the animation that takes place before the start of johnny's cutscene.

Kinda sucks this doesn't have an analogue anywhere in the 2077 night city map. I've heard it's in Watson somewhere but I could never find an area that looked similar.

You could definitely use "all bright" command, it will light everything to the max so you can see in those darker areas.

It loads it in so if you aren't doing the mission it isn't there (same as the area where you meet Hanson while pretending to be the Frenchman) .

Is this supposed to be where the kill zone is below the ground under the mesas across from the collapsed bridge?

Where exactly in the badlands is this located? I've found the old school, the NUSA facility that you go to in the Phantom Liberty ending as well as the tunnel out of Night City from ending with Panam. Never found the 2024 Night City tho.
