A couple of years ago I tried to buy a bottle of water in a shop in Gatwick (not the duty free) and was asked to show my boarding pass. The assistant told me that they were not allowed to sell me anything unless I showed my pass - those were the rules. Since then I have always showed my boarding pass. Maybe it has changed.

If u spend over £6/£5 in boots etc how do you get the vat back?!?

I remember using the self service machine in WH Smith at one of the Heathrow airport. It won't let me continue to pay unless I scan my boarding pass. Will that be illegal then?
