I work for duty free and because we are an export store we have to scan a boarding pass by law on any transaction, boots W H Smith etc are not export stores so they don't have to.

Good work Marten. Thanks for the clarification and the standing up for consumers. What if the airport shop you are buying from says their goods are duty free??

May 2017 and this practice is still pervasive.  Airport shops are still telling their staff to insist on boarding passes with the exception of W H Smith.  Even airport information told me it is required.  All customers I've seen sheepishly hand over their passes.  When I refuse, I'm told they won't sell to me.
