No matter what lifestyle you choose, always avoid extremism.

Actually Drew I live amongst the Amish in Ohio & PA many now have cell phones for business purposes. Only the most staunch orders or enclaves have forbidden them and they are known as the Swartzentruber Amish who are the best-known and one of the largest and most conservative subgroups of Old Order Amish. There are dozens upon dozens of Amish Orders in this nation.

I grew up with the Amish in Holmes & Stark Counties in Ohio. The contrast they put off to the general public is interesting. Most around me do not produce their own electric, as the Church forbids it. Instead they use natural gas or wood. Amish actually bought my grandparents’ old farm and my friend/coworker left the Amish Church in the 80s!

I grew up in Northern Indiana, where there was a very sizable Amish population. In fact, it is said that the local walmart in my hometown (goshen indiana, specifically the southside walmart, since goshen has 2 walmart stores) was the first walmart to build a place for Amish people to park their horses so they could shop.

It was very interesting growing up with this community nearby. You have to watch out for them on the roads all the time. Also have to watch out for horse droppings on the road. Besides that, they are nice people. I saw a group of young adult aged Amish people go into a restaurant once, and they couldn't stop watching the tv's. It'd be like if we saw an alien.

You and fellow travel-vlogger Peter Santenello should meet up once and compare notes, not just regarding your travels abroad, but also Peter's recent series on the Amish and Mennonites in Ohio.

We are RVing in Amish Country - Holmes County Ohio, and learning so much from the community. Many are not nearly as strict as we had anticipated and it’s actually really eye opening how much they look out for each other. We’re taking lots of notes.

Actually not true. Every Amish community has its own standards. You’ll see at times, it’s considered acceptable to have phones or automotive vehicles when it’s needed to push thrive your business. I was just at Sarasota, Florida. Where Amish own electricity run restaurants, bakeries, grocery markets, and such. Modern stoves, modern appliances too. Even saw a Amish house builder using a big truck. Amish very often will have range of rules because they believe who ever start the Amish settlement gets to decide new standards.

It’s really an abusive and inconsistent cult. In one village it’s okay to use a heater to warm your house, in another that means you are falling from faith and satan is taking you.

I'm poor to get latest technology and gadgets but even if I did have money I would only buy what I love not things that are popular or trending.

I used to live besides an Amish couple super nice. The husband wanted to leave because him and his wife had been married 15 years and had 11 children and doctors told her she should not have any more. But if she got her tubes tied or got birth control they would be excommunicated.

Don't know why so many people here are complimenting the Amish. It really is unfortunate that this is a practice that is even allowed to exist. Amish children are born into a world where they have no freedom to live the lives that the rest of us do. Sure, they can choose to leave their community at the age of 16, but at that point they have little formal education so no chance to go to college, and have to face the awful punishment of being shunned by their families. These poor people are basically brought into a world where they have no choice over who they are, and our government allows it.

As a person who lives in Pennsylvania Amish Country, I can say it's awesome. I know a lot of them and they are so nice.
