No they are not shunned if they choose modern life, but only if they choose Amish life and then leave it, or don’t observe the rules afterwards.

That's a different kind of lifestyle & Religion I saw here. I believe everybody is free to live their own lives. But no doubt, knowledge of technology is necessary & helpful too.

Its hegemony. Rumspringa allows for a certain amount of freedom in a small period of time, so in that time it would be fucking hard to adjust to as they called it "modernity" and natural anxiety will make them want to choose what they already know. Why not let them grow up modern and then give them the choice to regress 150 years instead? Because they would all leave.
