This applies to many cars, but I've noticed a lot of people have this issue on 73-87 Chevy Pickups.

I'm 52 years old and have driven and worked on old junk my whole life... never heard of this trick until I watched this 02/08/22. My life is now complete.

Can't believe this isn't posted everywhere! Got all the symptoms of this, had no idea what to try next until I watched this. I was just about ready to roll my car into a ditch and walk away from it. Gonna give this a go tomorrow, thanks for posting.

this is the corvette guy again. IT WORKED!!! after weeks of saturdays mucking around this video was exactly the solution. my son and i had problems with the rear brake line on the valve, would not budge, so we went from the top of the valve, the switch, as described, removed the switch and used a very small screwdriver to move the rod back into position. we tested that worked by verifying that the brake warning light went out. at last. bleeding worked normally. Eureka!

Thanks for the video and thanks to those commented. The technique for resetting the valve that worked for me was to open one front bleeder (with a hose attached to catch the brake fluid) and then to STOMP abruptly on the brake pedal. I tried this a couple of times and it worked!

The method of holding pressure on the brake pedal and then opening a front bleeder did not work for me. I tried that at least 5 times with no success. The "open first then stomp" method was discovered from reading through the comments. Thankfully I didn't have to disassemble the valve in any way or remove it.

Thanks again for all the comments!

Thanks. And I am a mechanic! It has been so long since I had PV go bad or get stuck I forgot all about them. Now I will check this out in the morning. But one word of advice; buy a new one. Once a valve sticks it is just a matter of time until it sticks again or fails completely

I was going crazy for a week trying to figure out why my rear brake will not bleed. This video really helped. Thanks

This happened on an '05 Silverado today. We used compressed air in the right rear to open the blocked valve back up due to a leak on the back and line replacement. Worked like a champ. Fluid started flowing like it should. Best pedal he has had.

Great explanation. This is the fix for when your pedal goes to the floor, no leaks, and bleeding isn't fixing it. Thanks.

This is a great video and excellent explanation of the function and problems associated with the brake valve. I believe this is the source of my frustrations trying to get my rear brakes working. I'll comment again if this information helps me with the fix. Thank you!!

Big huge help exactly what was going on with my 72 Cutlass. My solution was to relocate and get a new proportion valve. Turned old one into a simple T block X 2 one for front one for back. New valve located at master cylinder easy access worked great for me. I'm a simple dyi guy with no lift and limited space. Just getting to that old valve was next to impossible so by relocating it to where I can actually work on it saved me a lot of agg

A big shout out thanks to you about the problems with the proportioning valve! I have a 1987 plow truck that has developed this problem due to changing both front calipers. Tried to bleed brakes and nothing works. Have good brakes but the darn light won't cancel out! Now I know because of your help. THANK YOU.

Nice video. This is exactly the video I was looking for.

disc/drum Chevy.

Brake system is 90% new. Front calipers are geysers. Rear wheel cylinders just trickle. Disconnected all hard lines from the prop valve and blew compressed air through to be sure there was no clog. Replaced rear rubber hose in case it had collapsed but no change.

final suspect was the prop valve and you just confirmed it is indeed the piston inside. Attempting to reset the piston tomorrow and bleed it for the last time for a while.

@ Fuel Injection Sucks

I think you may have just solved my friends "rear freekin brakes don't seem to want to bleed" after replacing two masters due to leaks issue. Been dealing with it for about a month now. Thanks so much man, my buddy will be thrilled to see this video.

I wanted to tell you I just loosed the front brake bleeders and smashed the pedal to the floor, tightened them back up and now I can bleed the rear brakes so thanks for giving me a option on what to do, 15 mins and I was done bleeding all the brakes!
