Golf Lessons - Effortless Power

Golf Lessons with Derek Hooper – It has been stated that distance dictates potential when it comes to scoring in golf. If you are unable to hit the ball certain distances then you are not going to be able to hit short enough clubs into greens in order to score at the lowest level possible. Yet the average player struggles to generate enough club head speed to hit the distances they require to shoot the scores they dream about.

There is a way to generate effortless power and it does not require a lot of physical effort. It does not come from the hands and arms and it does not come from the upper body. These are the ways that most players try to generate speed and is why the fail to succeed.

To generate effortless power you must first understand how power is generated in the golf swing and then work through a series of drills to learn the new motion. Then you will start to hit the ball longer than you ever have before and allow yourself to hit shorter clubs into greens.

In this video I demonstrate how you can increase your club head speed and thus distance, not through more effort but actually with less effort.

Great video! I discovered this in my last round by accident. I was having a bad round and turned to my wife and said " I don't care any more." I totally relaxed and just started crushing the ball. Seeing this video validates what I felt. THANK YOU!!

I tried this yesterday and blew my husband's mind (and my own) with how much farther my drives went!! I love your videos! Thank you!

Best explanation and demonstration of lag I have seen. Well done.

A great tip Derek. Straightforward presentation under 5 mins. Some YouTube clips take ages to get to the point. Each component of the idea explained clearly. I've seen a real improvement in my ball striking with the idea of being relsxed. Well done and I've subscribed.

Just wanted to say thanks for the great tip. I tried it and it worked a treat. My whole swing feels better and  it has added 10+ yards to my drives. Irons are longer and more accurate. It also lowered the ball flight, so better penetration into the wind. Another unexpected result was that the change has eliminated my tendency to hit the ball fat. I am suddenly hitting it really well. Can't wait to get out on the course again!

Thanks my 7 yo just got into golf, which is causing me to learn and watch videos, So far this is the best yet on adding speed and distance.

I could not wait to try this at the range after watching this. I was so amazed at the results of hitting farther and consistently some 98% of the 2 hours I was practicing. Thank you so much, Derek, for the simple but most effective lesson I have been searching for in the longest time!

i saw a thing on tv where one of these long drive champions was being interviewed. They asked him for advice. He said the fastest way to hit farther is to grip the c, ub ridiculously light. he said "on a scale of 1 to ten, you want to grip it a zero"

Great video, I am having success with this. For me, I increased my tempo a bit but a much fuller back swing with loose wrist, and a full finish.  Not only am I getting more distance, I am getting more consistency. Last two days shot 90 and 87 and hit every fairway.  For me that is a good outcome!  Thanks Derek, see you next month at your school!

I could feel the club going faster the first time I hit the tip.

thanks derek. this is a great video and helped me immensely. the chanllege is to swing aggressively while keeping the hands/wrists tension-free during the entire swing. i'm now a club longer and hitting crisp shots.

Thanks for reply Derek .looseness does cause more club head speed. Although the club leaves the heel pad it feels in the transition that it falls more onto my left thumb as I hold with a strong grip. I don't loose any control of the club, in fact I feel a more solid impact. Thanks again.

Exactly what I just finally figured out. Swing speed went from 100-105 to 107-112 now. No extra muscular effort and actually a lot less tension everywhere.

Very good vid...brief, to the point, and good teaching steps. No need to have a 30 minute video when well presented.

I see what you are saying now after thinking about other sports. A Pro Tennis Player probably generates most of their power with their stomach muscles, their laterals, and their back muscles, depending on what type of shot they are trying to hit. In the past when I played tennis, I would use my arm and shoulder muscles to hit with. In the future when I play tennis, I will try to get power with my stomach, lats and back muscles, and I will probably vastly improve the power that I get on my tennis shots.

At first I did not quite get what you are saying, but for example I think some Pro Bowlers (PBA), use their back muscles to propel the bowling ball. And some of them might ever use their stomach muscles to protect their lower back from injury to stabilize their upper and lower body.

Thanks for the great video and I plan to gain a lot of insight and understanding of the golf swing from it. I think in the past when I used only my arm and shoulders to propel the golf ball, that it led to a lot of injuries, and that using the big torso muscles not only gives me more power and club head speed, but protects my body from constant injuries.

Regards

Luke

This is true and i film my swing and it is spot on but some of us for some frustrating reason swing it completely different once the ball is there even though it feels exactly the same as the practice swing.

Hi Derek, I think this is a very good video since it so fluent and natural.
I prefer this one compared with the one titled "a simple way to start the downswing", even if they both tell roughly the same thing.

Hi Derek,
I been watching many clips on swing on YT, what You learn looks very good for my winter practice.
My lack of lag will be my practice and I will go for Your ideas, weight transision, go for swing at first, not targetfix. Start with shorter swings and moving up as lag working good.
I tell how it workt out in coming days.
