Woah it’s like Lucas read the book and then talked about its influence a bunch of times

The fun contrast here is that Star Wars is ultimately an optimistic series inspired by Flash Gordon and action films from the 30s and 40s, where Dune has much darker themes and is about the corrupting nature of power

Paul atreides's life and ending are similar to anakin's life, not Luke's life. Both of them were said to be heroes but ended up as tyrants

Bro just found out that dune is the genesis text of the modern sci-fi genre 😑

Edit: Shit didn’t even know about foundation 😅, looks like an interesting read. You guys are right, the true origin of an idea is definitely hard to find, just keeps going down the rabbit hole…

Tell me you did not understand Dune without actually telling me. Paul is not Luke. Hes Anakin. Hes a false prophet doing terrible things but people are blinded by his powers and follow him anyway

Frank Herbert said "I try so hard not to sue him"

Luke wasn't the Chosen One Anakin Skywalker is the chosen one

To be fair, Luke isn‘t the chosen one in star wars

Dune and Star Wars are a wildly different telling of the heroes journey. The similarities are more like nods, once you leave Tattoine the similarities to Dune specifically are pretty much gone and other influences take over as the clear inspiration.

Paul subverts the the trope by not being the hero, nor the villain, but a representation of human character and the state of politics.

My favorite part is when Paul becomes an android and says “Live long and prosper”

Woah! It's like they're exploring themes that have been repeating for generations!

This dude thinks he discovered "the hero's journey" trope, which has been a fundamental theme of storytelling since before the written word.

So yeah:

1. Lucas in Star Wars was very likely influenced by Dune, The Hidden Fortress which Lucas openly acknowledgs, and other Japanese samurai movies and stories, which in turn are influenced by Westerns, and yet oddly enough some Westerns are influenced by Japanese samurai stories, etc.

2. Also, it looks to me like Frank Herbert in Dune was influenced by Lawrence of Arabia, Princess of Mars (Edgar Rice Burroughs), etc.

3. In short, there's a lot of influence, borrowing, and cross pollination in scifi. More fundamentally, there's the hero with a thousand faces and the hero's journey in literature stretching as far back as the ancient Greeks, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and so forth. Joseph Campbell described a lot of this, but so have other scholars like Carl Jung, Christopher Booker, even Jordan Peterson talks about this.

Most of these concepts have been basic concepts in story telling for hundreds of years.
