I like to imagine he was contacted by Dumbledore to plea for Buckbeak’s life to be spared as an expert opinion on the matter. But with the power of Lucius’s influence, Fudge an co would not listen to reason.

It’s too bad the Newt films didn’t get a better reception. Eddie Redmayne did such fantastic job (pun intended) of crafting Newt Scamander into living breathing character. His take on the character seemed to have layers and nuances that you picked up or felt through his mannerisms and way of speaking.

Newt would definitely show up to try to save Buckbeak. Maybe that's part of the reason why Dumbledore was so eager to look the other way for Hermione's time travel hijinks.

Isn't it also theorized that when aragog said he came to hagrid from a distant land in the pocket of a traveler, he was speaking of Newt Scamander? Also Luna ended up marrying someone in the Scamander family so she ends up related to him

Newt has a grandson named Rolf who attends hogwarts at the same time as Harry and he actually ends up marrying Luna Lovegood

...so he didn't appear. A name showing up on the Marauder's Map might be an Easter Egg at best. The character does not show up in The Harry Potter series. Being referenced as the author of a book that exists in universe isn't a cameo.

Knowing Newt the way we all do he was more in likely there to help Buckbeak remember the scene at Hagreds hut Dumbledore wasn't surprised that Buck was gone because he assumed that it was Newt who did it he didn't realize till later that it had been Hermione and Harry.
