The Entire Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts Timeline Explained

It’s been twenty years since the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or Sorcerer’s Stone depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on) and a little over a decade since the series concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007. In Deathly Hallows, Rowling dropped a major tidbit of information when she revealed the events of the Harry Potter series took place during the 90s, as opposed to modern day, as many fans originally thought. Now, with the inclusion of Fantastic Beasts into the timeline, things are getting a little crowded and maybe a little confusing too. To help iron things out and make the whole thing clearer and more concise, we’ve come up with a revised timeline.

We kick things off all the way at the start with the forming of Hogwarts. The years following the school’s establishment gave us a number of major magical events, from Merlin to the creation of the Deathly Hallows and the establishment of the Ministry of Magic. Dumbledore’s relationship with Grindelwald and the way it ended up affecting his family plays a major part in the timeline as well and leads directly into the events of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And while Grindelwald is busy declaring war on wizards and Muggles alike, Tom Riddle is rising up in the ranks, determined to pave his own path to world domination.
