linux allowes you to use cloud storage as RAM (if they allow random access), so you can literally download your RAM

As a kid I thought that my computer could run any game it just needed more storage 💀

Ready boost did work, as long as the flash drives were faster than the HDD.

Ready boost absolutely worked. It wasn't a silver bullet because using a thumb drive as RAM is not as efficient as hardware RAM, but it could make your PC a tiny bit less sluggish.

It was supported all the way up into Windows 10 until the 20H1 update, I think, and then it just disappeared quietly from the settings USB thumb drives without any announcement from Windows.

Shame, because it wasn't entirely useless. It couldn't help a computer that definitely needed a RAM upgrade, but it gave a way to boost performance enough to remove some slowness if your PC was starting to get just a little old.

Fun fact: Intel used to have something called Intel Turbo Flash Memory. It was a small flash module in a mini pcie slot. It used the readyboost feature to cache certain stuff to reduce hdd access

When I was a kid, i thought more storage = more performance. So I just plugged some usb flash drives to my computer and did nothing with them thinking they will improve the performance of my computer.

When I was still a kid, I thought that connecting 2 computers via a USB cable would make them perform better. My mentality was that they would share the load of processing the data, and I would be able to play games at super speed.
Fortunately, I never did find a USB-A to USB-A cable to connect both my computers. Even more fortunate that I didn't just make one myself.

For those who don't know, USB-A ports only output power (Unless the device is expecting to receive power), which means connecting USB-A to USB-A would cause both devices to send power down the same wire to each other, which would cause them to fry out. (I think) Which is why you don"t really see USB-A to USB-A cables being sold.

1 thing for sure, its slow as hell but not as slow as a hard drive.

I previously thought that expanding RAM through storage reservation was an unwise approach. However, I have since discovered an even less effective method.

I always loved the idea of a Hardware component being a small USB Drive you can use anywhere

I think I have vague memories of this feature. Never used it though.

This stuff were prime back in the Millennial and Gen X times in college & high school, the thumbdrive was a magic wand.

Also, fun fact, the first iphone 2g, whoever owns one back then in first release, its like being a celebrity

Edit: the andriods "or native OS" back then before the iphone 2 were very simple, operates like a touch screen vending machine.

Swap still exists and it's included by default on any modern os

Can't wait for this guy to found out memory virtualization

As a kid, i thought that if the computer is capable of running a video about any game, it could run the game itself.

The extra RAM is called VRAM (virtual ram). It take a part of the hard drive and uses it to store programs that are open but not currently in use. It’s used to allow more programs to be open if you have already reached your RAM limits.

I used the boost from 2014 until i got my upgrades in 2022. It was legendary 😅

My dad had a laptop that took 5 minutes to show the menu when desktop right-clicking with Windows 10, and it ran smooth as butter with Linux.
