The sharing of private info gets even worse when you consider facebook was at one point adjusting the algorythm for some people to see how much they could socially engineer the users feelings. They pushed only positive content to some users while having another group who only gets negative news on their feed to see how the commenting and engagement behavior on those groups are.

it's unfortunate to hear this, I had no idea. I needed the help over the last 2 years, my mother had the advice. "sometimes you don't click with a therapist, don't be afraid to switch" so I went through 4-5 different ones before I found one that was satisfactory for my needs. but I remember one woman who's preposed solutions were strange & didn't actually talk 50% of the time. she just listened with no input. her advice felt like I was getting it from someone naive about relationships.
I don't know much about reaching out for help, so better help did suit my needs at the time & did help in my growth. but this is too much, I'm going to seek help from now on locally. thank you for the video BC! :D

Please keep in mind that most therapists offer virtual sessions nowadays, and many offer sliding-scale fees if you are underinsured.
And some of the reasons most therapists do not offer texting options is because loose boundaries can actually hinder your progress and being able to contact your therapist 24/7 promotes dependence on your therapist, which can make it more difficult to discontinue therapy with them in the future. Another reason is that therapists need to be able to see your body language and/or hear your tone of voice in order to be most effective in their responses. Finally, therapists need work-life balance too! An overworked therapist will have a difficult time providing quality care.

To be honest, these videos deserve way more views than they get. I'd expect a video like this to get around at LEAST 50k views. These videos have pretty nice quality, nicely paced and stay very unbiased, with just enough interesting material or jokes to keep me watching, along with lots of statistics to help keep the scale of things in your mind.

As a therapist (preferring face to face therapy) I am horrified. It is so sad that over and over again we see initially compassionate and innovative therapeutic ideas being, essentially, motivated by greed!

online therapy is a very new area, alot of sketchy things need to get fixed

It doesn't matter that it's in the fine print. It violates hippa. A patient has to sign a release form before that info can be shared. Not only is it federal law that the patient has to sign a release form, but it is also federal law that the patient has to give informed consent. "Fine print" does not meet the informed consent requirements. I would suggest a class action.

Jezebel was not the first to expose the shady crap Betterhelp was doing. I remember Memology 101 digging into their shady practices in 2018. They were using unlicensed therapists, drastically overcharging customers and obfuscating sponsorship deals with YouTubers to list a few off memory.

It’s only gotten worse with the exposed data collection, which I’m sure they have been doing the entire time.

In general I don’t think people realize how long it takes to find a therapist IRL that works for you either, tons of people go through multiple therapists or counselors before they find someone they trust and relate to. It’s not always like that, but it’s a very personal relationship you’re trying to cultivate- you gotta rlly trust the person you’re talking to.

I applied to work with them as a counsellor. Had the interview and was invited but the terms and conditions were not only slave labour but IMO unprofessional. It was obvious that this was a money making start up rather than one that wanted to help people.

There was a massive shitstorm on the internet about betterhelp, was kinda eye opening to watch everyone just collectively forget about their shady practices. Looks like they haven't changed at all
