An excercise I find also helps, particularly with long runs, is playing the notes in different synchopated rythms. Not only does it help with memorisation, but with eveness too.

i feel comfortable using only my index and middle finger. is it enough to get to a good level of fast picking or is it necessary to use my ring finger also?
