Today we’re going to talk about what the pituitary is and what it does. The pituitary is part of the endocrine system.

The pituitary receives data and adapts various functions of the body to your environment to make sure you stay at a certain constant. This has to do with something called homeostasis, the ability to be stable within your environment. For example, if it’s cold, your body is going to pick up information and adapt to the cold.

The hypothalamus sends down a plan (various reactions for various situations) to the pituitary. The pituitary acts similarly to a manager in a business, coordinating employees to get certain things done and making sure those things get done.

The pituitary has a front part called the anterior and a back part called the posterior.

The anterior part of the pituitary gland is involved with:
• The thyroid (the release of the thyroid hormone)
• The adrenal (the release of cortisol and other hormones)
• The gonads (the release of hormones from the ovaries or the testicles)
• Prolactin (is involved in lactation)
• The liver (is involved with growth hormone and IGF1)
• Enkephalins and endorphins (are involved with decreasing pain)

The posterior part of the pituitary gland is involved with:
• Oxytocin (is involved with the release of breastmilk and the contraction of the uterus)
• Vasopressin (is involved with the retention of fluid in the kidney)

It would be cool if you made a course kind of like the immune system course, but focused on the nervous system and how to create wellness from a nutrition and lifestyle standpoint. (Ie. Not mental health, but the physical health of the nervous system that would improve mental health)

Off topic here but just had to share. Today I noticed that a strange little growth/nodule that has been on the back side of my knee (and made me worry for years that it could be cancerous) just disappeared! I’m sure it’s thanks to your healthy keto and Intermittent Fasting advice!! It’s just gone.

It was in a place where I could never get a good look at it but I’ve been worried for years! Now it’s just plain gone without a trace.

Keto and IF forever!! Dr Berg should get a Nobel Peace Prize!

Hello Dr. Berg. Thanks for covering this topic. My younger brother had most of his pituitary gland removed due to tumor on his optic nerve back in 2010. His condition was called craniopharyngioma. He had two open skull surgeries and eventually had to be treated via proton therapy. He has fully recovered now but at the expense of his pituitary gland. He now has to take steroids like hydrocortisone and minrin for hormones. It would be great if you can shed some light on his condition and how we can improve his situation.

Dr. Berg, please do a video about pituitary adenomas. 10 years ago I gained 30 pounds in 3 months, my period stopped and I was very swollen in my face. I was diagnosed with a microadenoma and my prolactin levels were high. I never had it removed but no matter how hard I try or how strict I keto I can’t lose much weight. I would so appreciate your ideas of what I need to do. My doctor just told me to watch my calories and gave me a bogus eating plan and offered to prescribe me phentermine 🤦‍♀️

Dr. Eric, Thanks for this video. Its very informative as is with all your other videos. I would like to know your thoughts about the medical condition, Empty Sella (Herniation of CSF into the sella with flattening of the pituitary gland) and about the possible healing treatments and foods for healing the pituitary. Thanks.
