What is Prevenient Grace?

Wesleyan "Order of Salvation" or "Stages of Grace", part 1: Prevenient Grace

I've seen this term, Prevenient Grace, come up several times in my reading about Wesleyan theology and John Wesley. Really interesting idea, and this concept of a spectrum or "stages" of grace.

Prevenient Grace is just the first stage as we discuss this aspect of Wesleyan Theology, John Wesley, Wesleyanism, Christianity, Order of Salvation, and all things Methodist and Methodism...

If you have some insight on this topic or anything I've talked about in this video, strike up a conversation in the comments below!

This is the first of the three, and I plan to cover the other two in future videos.

Do you have any insights into this "Prevenient Grace" thing that Wesley talks about? Would love to have a conversation with you on the topic.

Great video! One thing thing I've always wondered (and this might be due to a misunderstanding of prevenient grace and total depravity) why would God make depravity the consequence of sin if he's just going to use prevenient grace to cancel it out?

It's like solving the equation x +2 = 5 by first adding 3 to each side to get x + 2 + 3 = 5 +3, then turning around and subtracting 3 from each side to get right back to x + 2 = 5. Why take the extra steps? Wouldn't it make more sense to make the consequences of sin something less than total depravity in the first place?

I really like the picture of prevenient grace operating in our lives like a child’s assurance that they are loved without regard to behavior, etc. That may be a new thought for me.

Grace is at the core of salvation, and so our starting point for the salvation story impacts our understanding of grace. The idea that grace comes first, even before our awareness of our need for Jesus, and that this grace turns a light on for us in that awareness, really reinforces Romans 2:4 - it’s the kindness of the Lord that leads to repentance.

By the way, I would say that this grace is still not the starting point.

On another note, I know “preventing” has Latin roots (to come before), but I wonder where it would take us if we asked of this stage of grace, “This is grace that prevents what?”

I look forward to the conversations on this!

I'll help you out.
I finished this video. And I'm like Arminian and believe people can fail salvation from this scripture I found Galatians 5:19-21 that when sinning that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians was Paul's teachings, proves it can fail eternal salvation. Grandpa believed he couldn't go to Hell, and Arminians believe he could.
I'm against suicide. I was depressed also to suicidal. I almost did suicide as a 5-Point Calvinist. And these scriptures got me more hope.
I became more Arminian now from these scriptures I posted on here. I believe people can fail salvation.

Loving God is wanting to be useful for him much. What if a person could do that much of his time? And I enjoy working from this. People who enjoy working. When it's more likely to be boring to non-Christians.

New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Mark 9:33 (V)They came to Capernaum; and when He was in (W)the house, He began to question them, "What were you discussing on the way?"
.
Mark 9:34 But they kept silent, for on the way (X)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest.
.
Mark 9:35 Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, "(Y)If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."
.
This is for Christian world domination. Why to raise kids Christians. God Son Jesus said similarly to whoever is useful the most is the best merited of the apostles. Useful merit for eternal rewards and competition with other Christians. With God Son Lord Jesus Christ faith teaching, people will want to be useful for the kingdom of Heaven, which usefulness happens on Earth and if any other place. We need to help this world as much as we can!
This text could motivate, supposed to be Christian people, to do all types of usefulness. Chores, volunteering, grade school, high school, college, and work. Good people, this world needs them.

“While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. Combined with the concept of predetermination or “election”.
We serve a multifaceted God who offers us many types of grace.
Good stuff packed into a small video. Nice job!

(to start a new conversation chain) I do believe that the Calvinist Common Grace is similar to this idea of Wesleyan Prevenient Grace, but where it breaks down is at the NEXT stage. Because of the next level, there's a split of destination regarding how the ideologies see the nature of mankind. One sees man as fallen but naturally Holy (redeeming mankind to the natural, pre-fall state and relationship with God), the other sees man as naturally corrupt (perhaps because of the fall) and as needing rebirth to become a new creation (without the original sin nature).

Just one guys opinion.
