Asuka and Shinji • TEoE - 3.0 + 1.0 comparison

One of the saddest scenes in the originals and arguable one of the best in the rebuild series.

I like the rebuild. it feel like my shoulders become lighter when everything is done completely. no depressed and just next step for new life for everyone. I find it beautiful like I can feel the freedom and depression is gone.

Nothing tops the original. There’s something beautiful and charming about the original Eva. Anno was in a dark place, but as a result he constructed the most profound story and characters I have ever seen.

The Rebuilds are the story Anno wants to tell now that he has escaped that dark place. But theres always something raw and emotional about art created by those in pain.

Its really cool to see how an author's mental state impact his work, EoE is just plain depressing because that is where Anno was, while Rebuild 4 is a lot More optimistic...and you know what, I'll take Rebuild 4, seek help, try to live the life that you want, dont be angry at everything...be better.

Why is everyone trying to compare the two endings under the same lens when the point is that they're parallel opposites? The 3.0+1.0 scene is a callback to the original with an entirely new meaning, they're not better or worse lol. Apples and oranges

Some of ya’ll fighting over which of the two scenes were better and even having it side by side don’t realize that they’re two halves of the same whole. The EoE ending is what made revisiting the beach in Thrice so incredibly powerful. For Shibji to be there again. To get the chance to take what he and Anno learned in the original NGE and do it all again. By the end the beach scene in Thrice is deliberately shot the same way as the EoE beach scene but with two very different Shinji’s to show how he’s learned and grown from the first time he was here. Yeah yeah yeah original and Rebuilds are separate. No they’re not. Aside from the literal time loop theory being confirmed, poetically Thrice let alone the Rebuilds are built on the events of and sometimes are even an inversion of the original. The original run MAKES the Rebuilds what they are.

Take CLOSE note of Asuka’s plug suit design in the Thrice beach scene. It’s not the normal Langley Shikinami suit. It’s a mix of the design of Shikinami and Soryuu’s from the original. This insinuates (keeping the time loop theory in mind but also the “the version of me that exists to me, to you, to the audience” philosophy the original NGE purports in its final trippy episodes) that the Shinji and Asuka we see on the beach in Thrice is EVERY version of Shinji and Asuka embodied as a single Shinji and Asuka (Rebuild, original run, the versions that I interpret, you interpret, other people interpret, etc). Or at least that’s what they’re supposed to represent in that moment in part. And at the end of it all, the whole story Shinji has taken what he’s learned across the entire narrative spanning all these decades (very meta I suppose) to reach the peace and happiness that you see him reach in Thrice. Seeing these two scenes side by side you can see a real mirrored difference of the same scene. In one he’s losing his mind, in the other he’s at peace. In one he finds great difficulty in the honesty of reality perhaps, in the other he’s finally grown to where he can be honest with himself and Asuka (Asuka’s grown too which is partly the symbolism of her body growing to the age she should be and breaking her plug suit). Just my two cents.

I do like the rebuild take on the story and rei was written much better. But the ending is the most confusing and upsetting. I can understand he loves his wife but with mari there wasn't any build up for her to have a place. Didn't do much

The scenes are incomparable, mainly the context, although they reflect something similar with respect to the alteration of the third impact, in reality what happens is very different.

As far as I'm concerned, both are perfect due to their impact on the contexts that unfold in the story.

I love the original that’s for sure but the remake is really an amazing one as well to end it all. Very great experience, made me think about my whole existence

They spent half the budget on Asuka's damaged plug suit for the rebuild. This feels like the only time the plugsuits are drawn with this rubber/leather like texture.

I think the best of both worlds is the original ending the show produced. It has the happy ending the rebuild series envisioned in the rebuild without all of the complicated plot/lore elements that muddled the tone of the story for me.
