Create a custom list for sorting in Excel by Chris Menard

Excel has built-in custom lists. You can sort data by days of the week or months of the year. Or create your own custom lists to sort by any other characteristic that doesn’t sort well alphabetically, such as July to June, or October to September, or S, M, L, XL.

To create a custom list:
1) type in your list in the order you want it down a column.
2) while it is selected click on File | Options | Advanced
3) Scroll down to the bottom and click Edit Custom List
4) Click Import and OK twice

This video was very helpful and worked for one of my pivot tables but is not working for another. I was able to create the custom list but the pivot table seems to be ignoring the list commands. The chart the worked just contained text all cells in general format. The other that's not working contains special characters', letters, and numbers all general text any idea why following the steps above are not working? I also tried changing the format of the cells to text and that didn't help.

Hi, thanks for sharing this. Is there a way to sort by number if some numbers have a letter at then end of it. Example: 100, 101, 102, 10A and 10B with other numbers such as 200, 221, 300? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the post. If we have more than 1 style with size s, m. l.xl (ex. style1-s, style1-m, style1-l, style-1-xl, style2-s, style2-m, style3-l.. stye). How Can we custom sort with 1.same style and 2) size?
