Rep. Porter grills Wells Fargo CEO on bank tellers relying on public assistance to make ends meet

Did you know that 1/3 of bank tellers rely on public assistance to make ends meet?

Meanwhile, Wells Fargo made $20 billion in profit last year.

Congresswoman Katie Porter asked CEO Charlie Scharf if he thought it was proper for taxpayer dollars to go toward shoring up his bank's underpayment of tellers.

He didn't have many answers. He apparently wasn't even sure that Wells Fargo is profitable; he only said he "believes" it is!

That’s absolutely absurd. The Bank made $20 Billion in profit, yet 1/3 of their Bank Tellers are on Public Assistance.

I was a bank teller for 10 years. Because I didnt have a business degree, I was capped at 30k a year. Husband was working as a plumbers apprentice and we still had to use WIC. All of my check went to child care.
Finally came to my senses and realized it was more benificial for me to stay home with my 3 kids than to pay for someone else to raise them. Add the cost of lunches and gas, were doing so much better now financially with me staying home.

Also consider the level of stress on a teller... $80-100k plus a day went through my hands from commercial deposits and I balanced my drawer to the penny.... I could barely pay my mortgage of $500 a month... THEN the bank requires insane quarterly sales goals or you lose your job. Let MY babies be preachers or artists before they ever consider banking. My last day as a banker was in 2016, its taken 5 years for that toxic energy and mindset to leave. We finally have peace in our home again. Thank you Lord!!!

If you only believe it but don't know it, then you ought not to be getting $23 million as Wells Fargo President and CEO. Nobody should be getting $23 million for ANY job but if you don't even know if the bank you run is profitable, then you are at best incompetent and at worst a liar. I'm going with the latter.
