Final Score Was 6-5 (Minor Mistake At The End Lol)

BL3 engine and mechanics is just much better.
If we could remake the BL2 story in the BL3 engine, that would be the perfect game.

I hope that BL4 takes all of the best aspects from BL2 and BL3 to make the best Borderlands yet! Sadly, after Wonderlands, I am not super optimistic.

Respect, for reviving your pet even though the boss fight was over. Virtual empathy matters.

I'd say Handsome Jack is one of the best villains in gaming overall.

BL2 has better story, characters, and locations compared to BL3.

BL3 has better gunplay, guns, and gameplay compared to BL2.

If I had to only pick one to play exclusively I would still pick 2 over 3, purely due to its superior story and characters and that Anarchy Gaige doesn’t exist in BL3 (and no, a shotgun with a gimped version of it doesn’t count). While the gunplay and guns are super fun in 3 (even though nothing in 3 was as fun as Anarchy Gaige IMO) the piss poor writing, bland-ish environments and super swingy balance changes soured what was good.

I could replay BL2 with friends till the end of time and never get bored, but BL3 made me tap out completely after I finished the 2nd DLC purely due to the quality of writing and the variety of locals. You know you’ve got good writing and incredibly solid level design when you make a whole spin-off game based off 1 DLC.

Though I wouldn’t turn down a remake of BL2 with some of the updated mechanics of BL3 (like mantle/slide, among other things)

BL2 has a much better replayability thanks to its decently sized map where you don't need a vehicle in almost every location, the gameplay in 3 for me is much better but replaying BL3 is pretty painful with how big the maps are and running from point A to point B just feels better when it comes to Borderlands games, travelling all the time is boring for me.

I love both of these games, 2 has the 360 era game charm to it and it's like magic just playing and exploring throughout Pandora. 3 still has charm to it too and the planets are amazing to explore and look at aswell. But what matters most (to me at least) is that unlike most series nowadays the Borderlands games keep me hooked and wanting to come back to replay time and time again.

I'm a BL newbie, just finished the story on BL3 for the first time, and the only criticism I have of the game is the absence of the vault hunters in any cutscenes events. It was jarring for me especially in the sequence where Tyreen attacks the Raiders and Deleon near the end. Also, the way every siren but Amara has radical and amazing powers that are integral to the plot is weird to me.

Endgame variety to BL2? 3 forced story playthroughs to get there. Then Digi-Peak and 12 Raid bosses. Non-repeatable slaughter maps. Headhunters? I mean, sure the Marcus Mercenary day one was great, but nobody repeats the others at all.

BL3: play the story ONCE and you can now have fun with endgame if you want. Mayhem system allows you to move up or down based on your skill level. 17 Bosses with Raid health and damage. Slaughter Maps you CAN repeat. Cartels and Bloody Harvest are vastly superior to Headhunters on BL2 and they were FREE. Maliwan Takedown is single-handedly the best endgame content from any of the games. Guardian Takedown has two of the greatest boss fights, marred by the annoying crystal phases. BL3 DLC's are generally better than BL2 DLCs except Assault on Dragon Keep. The Proving Ground got a TRUE difficulty option, making the final boss of each a raid boss.

Knowing all of that I can not see how anyone would rank BL2 endgame higher. Especially when you factor in how abysmal Pearls were in BL2 and how pretty much every ounce of endgame on BL2 was paywall. MOST of endgame on BL3 was free and included with the base game.

Edit: just got to the part where you gave farming to BL2... you said that you couldn't farm dedicated sources on BL3 "until towards the end" which isn't true. BL3 spread the dedicated loot pools way before the end. And you seem to keep moving your criteria around for BL3 based on LAUNCH vs. how it is now. BL2 for THREE YEARS had a 3% dedicated drop rate for a bunch of things. The Conference Call drop rate is still abysmally low from Warrior. Norfleet is like a 2% drop chance from Hyperius (feels worth it). BL2 took THREE YEARS to bump that up.

Performance wise: BL2 on Xbox 360 was dogshit. That's where I got my start. It sucked. We had the Graveyard.exe bug. Frames would be non-existent if someone used multi-pellet weapons near you. It was bad. That's comparable to old gen with BL3 now. BUT I wish they had done some sort of option for the old gens that allowed lower quality graphics or something. I dunno.

In terms of gameplay 3 was better than 2, nonetheless, personaly, i prefer bl2 level design. The maps on the third bl where a little too big and for that reason they felt less varied, in that aspect Bl2 was more colorful to say a word.

I love borderlands 3 for its gameplay speed, but even though 2 ia slower, it has much better story, a GREAT villain, better farming IMO, has a challenge to it (balancing isnt over the top with every gun, but i still wish more guns were viable in endgame), it has tons of raid bosses, solid DLCs, and i dont just see an inventory full of orange gear. I almost wanna go back to it just talking about it. I just dont have my old squad anymore since 1 of them doesnt have a playstation anymore and 1 of them died

BL1 GOTY takes the cake for gameplay IMO. Not as much skill tree depth as in BL2/TPS (I think BL3 has too much, personally), but the guns are iconic and are my favorite designs of the series due to the comic book > comical look. The GOTY enhancements fix so many issues I had with the OG and brings so much to the table. Story will not beat BL2.

from a content prospective both are amazing value, 2 has a better story, 3 has better gameplay, plus both games became better after all the patches and dlc, much preferred the extra characters of 2 vs another skill tree in 3, 2 essentially gives 3 playthroughs per character for a wopping 18 playthroughs with uvhm/tvhm, thats before op levels, good times

tbh it just depends what i want. if im in the mood for a playthrough ill do bl2 but if i wanna experiment with builds or really anything endgame related i always go bl3

One particular thing Borderlands 3 did really good imo was the Crew Challanges. I wish they keep expanding those challanges in further games. Little secret hideouts where an ECHO is laying around or a Legendary beast to kill. That made the exploration aspect of BL3 so good. In almost every corner of the map there’s something to find or explore.

Even tough you didn’t had this in BL3 (except for the Vault symbols), I swear every new playtrough, I found things I hadn’t seen before in the previous playtrough.

Theg need to keep doing this in future games

That seems like a fair assessment to me.
My big thing is the weight you give categories, if you are a story comes first type then it may not matter how many pluses the other game gets for example.

It's BL2 for me, but man I really don't like what they did to endgame late in that games life cycle. Especially going back after all those years and bumping it up to level 80 and OP10. That was just not a good idea at all imo.

I wouldnt mind a remastered BL2 with BL3 engine. One thing i love in BL3 is just Moxie and her Mech.

You can’t battle people’s memories. 3 is the better game in so many ways, but you’ll never be able to convince people of it, no matter what facts you present
