Are There Two Creation Accounts In Genesis?

Skeptics have claimed Genesis 1 and 2 contradict and give us different creation accounts. But does the evidence support this hypothesis? Thanks to the scholar Benjamin Kilchör for helping to make the script for this video.

I've always assumed that the creation account in Genesis 2 was just a more detailed explanation of the creation of man and thus didn't conflict with Genesis 1.

One of my favorite things about studying the Bible is the constant mirroring effect throughout all of scripture. Amen! So well done.

I stumbled upon this issue after reading Genesis for the second time. It was like someone dropped a boulder on my head. I appreciate this video and in depth explanation.

A quick way to answer this question is to see that Jesus Himself conflated both chapters into one unified story in Matthew 19:4-5:

"And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female, ’ (quoted from Genesis 1:27) and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? (quoted from Genesis 2:24).

Hey IP, these videos keep getting better and better with more knowledge and strengthening our faith and reliability in the Bible! God bless you and keep doing what you're doing! Do you plan on doing an in-depth analysis of the Book of Revelation? It's my favorite book in the Bible, there are many views about the content of Revelation; no Christian has the same view as another Christian, whether its about the 1, 000-year Millenium Kingdom, various symbols throughout the book, and how and when the Rapture will occur. Such a video would be eye-opening!

¡Gracias! I was taught about the two traditions unified, that created two different account of Creation. This is really interesting, and I feel the text turns even more scientifically fit interpreting it that way

I have been telling people for over twenty years now, Go back and read Genesis, there are two different creations. Thanks for updating this point.

Having seen the video, unsurprisingly, I'm impressed at the level of research.

I like the focus on Priesthood, it is complementary of John Bergsma's description of Gen 1 as being the creation of the Temple.

It is also complementary of Scott Hahn's the Lamb's Supper which presents the Apocalypse of John in addition to being prophetic and a wedding feast as the engagement of the liturgical service though of the Christian tradition.
This is an excellent confirmation of a bookend typical of the chiastic structure.

The hymnic poetry you referenced is the cause of most of the confusion. Great all around video.

I remember last year I looked at an atheistic website that laid out a bunch of Bible "contradictions" Genesis 1 & 2 pretty much being the main point. The understanding came pretty quickly if you simply take a moment to look closely at the words being stated. As already said in the video, the Bible said Eden was a garden, not the whole world. This misunderstanding also ties into people believing in Lilith, which I think is in Wicca. She was thought to be Adam's first wife in Genesis 1, while Eve was thr second in Genesis 2.

I always thought it was so obvious that genesis 2 was an elaboration on day 6 that it seemed ridiculous to even consider the notion they're different, contradictory accounts

Haven't yet seen the video so I am super curious how you put it. The way I read Gen 1 is that it's the Acts of Creation framed in the literary construction of the seven-day week. And then Gen 2 continues not as a second creation account, but as a family history of the earth and human society (in hebrew, a "toledot", not strictly a genealogy). So it seems they are two different literary genres and not attempting to even tell the same thing! Looking forward to your video, love you brother!

The actual text of Scripture reads so much more comfortable this way when taking on this view/understanding/intention if its words than that of the traditional teaching. Thank you for being so clear and concise in what is obviously your well researched understanding of the text!

Thank you for the hard to find chapter mirroring and the hidden temple parallels. The Priestly connections. At the end of the day it is a unity.

Would love to see your analysis on the two trees. Really liked this video.

This video really resonated with me
I really liked the idea of the creation week being a dedication ceremony for the planet.
God was ready to begin a work that was a long long time in the making and now the planet needed to be consecrated.

Genesis 1 is God's account of His creation week to Adam. He uses inhuman language such as 'the great light, the lesser light'. It's both a poetic and a technical description.

Genesis 2 is Adam's account of creation, from the perspective of his first observations, so the creation of the Garden of Eden and of his wife. The description is much smaller in scope and more personal.

This was combined with later knowledge his family gained such as what kind of resources can be found along the 4 rivers. It looks like 1 river was poorly explored at the time of writing. It was written before the flood as it implied the current presence of the rivers, but those were destroyed in the Flood.

His family kept writing their history, and this was later edited together by Moses.

Genesis 2 is simply an elaboration, that drills down into more detail as to what transpired. There is similar elaboration done in Revelation 12-14, albeit more of a symbolic synopsis of events from the ancient war in heaven leading up to the outpouring of God's wrath, which many wrongly assume is placed in chronological order in the book and leads to much misunderstanding about the order of end-time events.
