Little nuggets like this are why I follow this channel. I'd never even heard of a third creating account, that is really fascinating

I am reconnecting to my Taíno heritage and learning about Taíno mythology, and the differences between Caribbean creation flood myths and those from the MENA region are so fascinating. Lots of Caribbean creation myths conceive of the unfinished world as being a vast desert plain studded with mountain oases that isn’t really livable until the ocean’s waters are released to flood the plain(via different methods in different myths), allowing for movement between the newly formed islands. Makes sense for islanders. And it’s fascinating the difference between that and the idea of a chaotic ocean world having order imposed upon it and being separated into land and sea.

After learning this, I really appreciate hearing names like Leviathan and Tiamat still used in media. Its like taking part in one of humanity's oldest traditions.

More good stuff! I have read all of those passages but had not realized that they were an account of creation. Thanks I learn a lot from your content.

I remember something like this in the song of Miriam when I picked through the Hebrew years ago.

Professor Christine Hayes discusses this in her lectures.

Discussed by Professor Christine Hayes at Yale University in her 1st lecture of the series on the Hebrew Bible from 8:50 to 14:30 minutes, lecture 3 from 28:30 to 41:35 minutes, lecture 4 from 0:00 up to 21:30 minutes and 24:00 up to 35:30 minutes and lecture 7 from 24:20 to 25:10 minutes.

Also, look up:

A reading of Genesis 1 in the New Revised Standard Edition (updated) is completely consistent with this concept of the chaotic waters found elsewhere. The waters existed when god BEGAN to create earth. He didn't create the waters; he merely separated them. Marduk didn't create the heavens and earth ex nihilo, either. He killed Tiamat and fashioned her cleft corpse into the heavens and the earth. Tiamat was a sea goddess from the depths. Not the same story, but 100% consistent with the rest of the region, including the Israelite account.

i was aware of the leviathan in Job, but I always took it as The Israelite way of saying. No it wasn’t Baal who killed Leviathan It was Yahweh. In essence it wasn’t saying this is how creation happened. It was saying my God is better than your God.

When I'm reading the subtitles, the t-shirt words keep inserting themselves into the narrative because they have a similar color and position: You're probably familiar with the first two Spider Man! that we find in the first two chapters of Genesis Spider Man! but there's a third Spider Man! ...

It makes more sense if I close my eyes.

Fantastic bite sized video, as always. Thanks Dan!

I like the version where God defeats the number 17 bus and goes to the bakery to get a creation.

He accidentally eats half of it on the way home, which is why a lot of what we believe today is made up.

Interesting stuff. It would be interesting to just get a list of the various references (including those in "various other places") and get an idea of how complete this third account is and how much or little it seems to map into other ancient stories.

A free interpretation of the scriptures, possibly taken from future propheties and poetric descriptions of the post flood events like the exodus.

Love all your content and I guess one of my most basic questions is. What is the clearest evidence of Jesus of Nazareth and what according to most realistic account was his birth date and death? Hope my question finds you and thank you for all your work. Love your channel and TikTok.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your work. I never fail to learn something new from it.

What do you make of Tsumura's critique of putatively chaoskampf imagery in the bible?

Equating the Sea with the original Chaos was very common and is shown in Genesis. So was the slaying of the Chaos Beast, often a dragon, from which the world was created from its corpse.

With it being spread across many books, can we properly call it a "third creation account"? Or is it more accurately scattered references to creation myths from other cultures that would have been familiar to the authors?

Isn't the Flood story also a retelling of the Creation myth?
