Fix Your Pike ✅

If you’ve done Pike Push Ups long enough you know that:

1. The are hard and humbling, if done correctly.

2. Some days you feel light like a feather 🪶 and other days heavy as a rock 🪨

The second point is due to the nature of the exercise. For one, just having the legs and hands apart a few inches makes a HUGE difference. And for two, the amount of lean, weight distribution, and overall execution of the movement changes absolutely everything.

First correction then, would be to do your best to have a consistent set up. Second, make sure you are using the same technique every time you do the exercise to keep training and progress as honest as it can be.

Now to the “mistake” I show on this post, but before the usual disclaimer: the first variation IT IS NOT WRONG and won’t cause any issues, but here is why I prefer and teach the second variation:

❌ Keeping the Hip Angle closed, and/or having the torso fully vertical when on the bottom position.

✅ Open the hips as you lean forward, and have an diagonal upper body when on the body position.

💭 Why? Keeping the torso vertical makes the exercise 10x harder, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. There are better ways to make the exercise harder without changing the mechanics of it (more rom, pauses, extra weight etc)

If you are doing Pike Push Ups, I supposed you want to eventually do a Handstand Push Up. That’s the main reason for having an angular torso.

When we do a HSPU this is how the torso needs to be in order to keep us in balance (unless you go wide with elbows to the side). If we don’t practice Pikes this way, we’ll have a hard time transferring that technique to the actual HSPU.

Film yourself the next time you do Pikes, and look for this subtle, but somewhat important detail. This could be a good reason why some days you can do 5, and other days you can do 10.

Thats what im doing wrong. The first example puts a lot of stress on my shoulder tendons and is uncomfortable. Gotcha...thanks
