The first time I picked up a guitar I had no idea what I was doing(still don't most of the time) I don't even think I knew what a pick was. So instinctively I used this technique. Now, about a year later, I've tried ever pick under the sun, still doesn't beat my trusty digits, I don't think I'll ever stop strumming with my fingers.

This is good. I never could get used to a pick - I lose the feel of the strings. Using the fingers also gives a bit of a Carter scratch.

Thanks Lauren, playing fingerstyle uke and recently guitar. Nylon uke strings need the volume (nail) on downstrokes, but acoustic steel string guitar gets too loud/boomy doing this, especially when mixing it with fingerstyle. Just played a mixed piece and sounds much better and balanced.
