Speaking as one whom handles a lot on cash; The pen just detects bleach. Older US bills were very similar to each other, so a common fraud method was to bleach a dollar bill and reprint on it as a larger bill. That way the bill had the correct feeling paper, or cloth.
Dont bother with the pen for new bills, bleaching is not how they are counterfeited. My favorite is a knife tip under the blue stripe bands.

I just got paid 13 $2 bills 3 had exact same numbers except the last 2 digits and all the other numbers were the same. 3 were from 1976 with almost exact same numbers but were extremely dirty so was hard to see with marker.

I just received 39 of the two dollar bills from 2017A. Because the serial numbers were in sequence and there were so many of them, I thought they were all fake. I looked online for information about them to find out if they were fake or not. What a read was concerning because it stated that the serial number would have 11 letters and numbers in each serial number. I also read about the security strips that were to be to the right of Jefferson. Plus it stated that the large number 2 on the front would change colors. None of this was true about the ones that I have here in front of me. The paper feels correct and the printing also feels raised. I don’t have a currency marker to check them but I feel like I am still safe with the paper. I was however able to see what appears to be different colors of fiber within the paper. I am still curious as to why the websites I reviewed stated that they had 11 numbers and alphabetical characters in the serial number. Well I guess not everyone can be right online.

I have 4 one of them one is from 1976 but looks just like the first one you showed so it seemed kinda fishy
