Looking for new activities to replace gaming 👉

About Cam Adair:

My name is Cam Adair and I'm the founder of Game Quitters, the world’s largest support community for video game addiction. Our community has about 50,000 members across 94 countries.

Growing up I was a fairly normal Canadian kid. I went to school, played hockey, and then I would go home and play video games. That all changed in the 8th grade when I began to experience a lot of bullying, leading me to drop out of high school. For the next few years I was living in my parents basement playing video games up to 16 hours a day, depressed, and struggling with anxiety. Eventually it got so bad I wrote a suicide note, and that's the night when I realized I needed to make a change.

Fast forward a few years later and after a bad relapse where I binge gamed for five months straight, I quit and this time, decided to share my story online about my experience. After hearing from thousands of others who shared that they too struggled, I had the honor giving a TEDx talk. That led to me hearing from even more people. I knew I needed to do something more, so in 2015 I launched Game Quitters with the intention of creating the best platform possible to help anyone in the world who wanted help with their video game addiction.

Today my life is surreal. I travel all over the world speaking and sharing about the work I do, I was recently named one of Canada's Top 150 Leaders in Mental Health, and had a paper published in Psychiatry Research. My story has been featured in BBC, Forbes, ABC, Vice, CBC, CTV, and so many others... but more importantly, I'm happy. I live my life to the fullest and do my best to make every day count. It's a stark contrast compared to the days I was playing video games. And I just try to be an example of what's possible for you too, if you commit to realizing your full potential.

I'm here because I love to help, so if you have any questions leave a comment and I'd be happy to support you.

I've been doing the 12 step program and realised it can be applied to video game addiction too, i've been sober for 11 months and video games free for 6 months. I can truly say that i have a new life today. A life living without shame, anxiety, depression. I never want to go back.

Love it brother. This channel hasn't blown up yet simply because people don't know how big of a roll gaming plays in our youth. As time moves on, I think more and more people are going to being to realize that gaming addiction is very real. Keep up the great work man, you're an inspiration to all of us seeking to break this habit.

Hey Cam, I have 22 years old and I'm from Brazil, I don't play MMO's for a long time but still I'm totally addicted with story driven single player games, like when I play a title I really like, I wish to experience all outcomes ( if it's a RPG) and do all achievements and still I play those games for something like... 16 hours a day. And when I play a new title I don't have too much interest I keep playing all day just to complete the game because I hate leaving things unfinished, even it's a game I don't like. I don't have many social skills, and I think I lost my immediate wish to improve them, also I feel lost and without purpose and when I get into the core about what I really want. It seems I just want to have a violent fist fight with another guy ( like in fight club) and just keep kicking ass and getting my ass kicked over and over again.

I can't comment specifically on this retreat but I do want to say that I 100% believe in going for residential treatment for gaming addiction like Cam mentioned.

Last year I went to a treatment centre here in Canada for gaming addiction and I honestly believe that it saved my life. I was caught in a vicious cycle of binge gaming for months that was destroying most relationships around me. I knew I had a problem when I wanted to stop gaming but I physically couldn't. The day before I went to treatment I was physically ill and bedridden, I couldn't believe gaming had pushed me this far.

I encourage all of you looking for help to seek out residential treatment centres near you that deal with gaming addiction or digital dependency addiction. If you can't find any look for problem gambling addiction services as they may be able to help you as well (gaming and gambling addiction are very similar in nature). ✌️

I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my YouTube channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates. 💙❤

I have a question, Cam. In fact, a few of them.

1. Is being a game *developer* different than being a gamer?
2. Is it better to play games that have actual lessons? (e.g. sandbox games give you creativity)

thx for reading!

This cabin looks sweet. I was always saying if you combine something like that. With bullied kids. The bring in some badasses like Steve Austin, maybe the rock, chuck liddell, the gracie brothers. And let the struggling kids basically copy their hero for a month or just a little bit of time. You could probably transform the kids life. People just need a good environment and some times some mentoring.
