Steve Rogers was ALWAYS a Hero - Captain America Retrospective

A Marvel Video Essay that looks back at Captain America in a Post-Endgame World. An MCU Retrospective analyzing why Steve Rogers is the Ultimate Marvel Superhero, and why the future of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe feels so strange without him.

From his introduction in The First Avenger, to his final scene in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America and Sacrifice takes a look at the journey Steve Rogers underwent over the course of Marvel Phase 1,2, and 3.

With so many wondering what happened to Captain America after Endgame, I think a better question is what happened to Marvel, and will the future of the MCU be able to recapture the magic that Captain America brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There have been plenty of MCU Phase 4 Video Essays, but rather than complaining about the Current State of Marvel, I think its best to look back and see what we can learn from the success that was the Infinity Saga.

If you like this, I currently have a Thor Video Essay (retrospective really) out

And an Iron Man Retrospective in the early stages of being worked on.

The scene where he sees himself pre serum and wistfully remembers ... it's beautiful.

"Even after years of him looking like this... we still believe he's still the same scrawny guy." I have been absolutely stunned by how many scenes Chris Evans plays as post-serum Steve, but I still see pre-serum Steve. Especially the scene when he is in the plane and explaining to Peggy that it's his choice. Idk what it is about that scene, but it has pre-serum Steve written all over it.
👏👏👏👏

Cap is my favorite MCU character and I don't see anyone taking that spot in this universe of films

When I saw the first Captain America movie theaters I immediately felt a kinship with the character. When I was fresh out of high school, I tried to follow my dream of being in the military and got a medical rejection from all branches ( mine was bullshit). I tried for years to get a waiver and failed. Seeing how Steve never stayed down and never get bitter about his circumstances even after getting the Super soldier serum inspired me.
I have a Captain America shield hanging in my room. (⭐️)

I admit that I've come late to your video on Cap. That being said, Bravo!!! You have captured my favorite all-time comic book character's essence in your narrative. I always knew that Cap stood for America. Obviously the red, white, and blue of his costume and shield. But as you said so eloquently it's his selflessness. His commitment to his moral compass and his ideals that form his vision of what America really stands for. I'm 64 and I first saw Cap as a 5-year old on the cover of Avengers #4. That was it! I was immediately hooked. I have always identified with him. And though it broke my heart when Tony Stark/Ironman sacrificed himself for the future of the Universe, it was a fitting end to his story arc. But I couldn't stop smiling and crying tears of happiness for that last shot of Steve finally getting to be with the woman he loves. A most satisfying ending to The Infinity Saga. Again, a great job. I look forward to seeing all your other videos. I have indeed subscribed.😊

Captain America is probably one of the best superhero’s. Up there with Spider-Man and Superman. Must be the color palette.

I never cared about Captain America as a kid. To me, he as more boring than Superman. When they cast Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, I became a lifelong fan. He gave him the humanity I never saw in the comics. Chris, the directors, and the writers made him into a character I could root for and understand.

I loved the Captain America films. I remember one of my co-workers just HATING Captain America, and when I asked why, she said that people like that, honest, patriotic men who would risk and sacrifice for the greater good just don't exist. She was a big fan of Tony Stark, she said she could understand him.

Such a great essay on Cap. When I watched the movies I always thought that cap is one of my favorite mcu heroes just because of the fact, that all of his decisions were relatable and not self centered. For a lot of people it is that what making cap as one of the most boring characters because they like the drama of a Tony Stark when he does what is the best for him and how to deal with the criticism. But as you said cap is way more than just the never failing guy. He needed to involve into the hero he became and is still the small kid from Brooklyn which would get beat up just to stand up for the right.

He is just exactly the moral compass that the avengers needed to do what is necessary. And that is something we aspect from a superhero but didn't get from the most of the other avengers.

Cap in the MCU is a perfect example of how to write a character perfectly using subtlety, laconism and time. He has a fundamental role in the whole saga and yet he is so elegantly presented that you could forgive someone if he misses that importance completely. Of all the heroes, his arc is the one that compels rewatchs of the saga to further understand and appreciate.

The part where he stood alone against Thanos' army to me felt like Cap was at one of his lowest points in his life. In the movies before Endgame, he sacrificed a lot (loyalty to the American government; friendship with Iron Man; reputation as one of the Earth's greatest heroes) and he still had the attitude to say "I can do this all day", but in this scene, yes, he still walked a bit toward Thanos' army, but his body language gave me the feeling that he's telling himself, "Sh*t, I can't do this all day, not anymore, not against these odds stacked against me". Cap is only good at fighting the likes of Hydra, not the likes of Thanos' army (we saw that in Avengers 3, he had a hard time punching some of Thanos' troops down cuz they're simply too strong that his serum can't top it). Look at what Thanos got: an army; each soldier being too powerful even for him or Black Widow or Hawkeye; a bunch of those space slugs from Avengers 1; the Sanctuary; and a lot of flat land with which to corner Cap.

But he still stood there anyway. Himself, and a broken shield.

In Endgame, Tony blamed Cap for the team not being together, but Steve offered an olive branch. Steve was out fighting with the team while Tony was going solo as Ironman, even after Pepper told him to stop. Bruce BEGGED Tony to call Steve, but he hesitated so long that Squidward and friends came to destroy New York. Dr. Strange wanted to go back to Earth, but Tony wanted to chase down Thanos and fight him by himself. Everything that Tony blamed Steve for was projection from his own guilt. In my opinion, Cap wasn't the one to break up the team. He was the one holding it together while Tony was an egotistical, showboating hothead. Then, when consequences came knocking, he didn't even have the guts to take responsibility for his actions.

Captain America is the ultimate super hero. I love The Winter Soldier and its the best Marvel film in my book . It had lots of action, character development, espionage and liked that first suit he wore .

The best part about him is he isn’t the strongest avenger
Just because he can’t beat Thanos doesn’t mean he won’t try. “As long as one man stands against you, you’ll never claim victory”
