Mastering Self Control | Stoic Exercises For Inner Peace

The Stoics bring forth the theme of self-control on a regular basis. Epictetus, for example, spoke about abstaining from talking about vulgar things, and Marcus Aurelius points out that we should set limits to comfort and consumption.

Challenge yourself. Do things your mind tell you can’t do. Btw, being able to control yourself actually gives you self-confidence. *You can’t have confidence in yourself knowing you can’t control yourself.*

*Mastering emotions demands a lot of introspection:*
- dealing with past baggage
- processing all emotions, feeling them
- understanding that nothing in life is personal
Understand yourself - understand others

One thing that taught me about self-control is delayed gratification, especially with things like sex, entertainment, music, indulgence of a favorite snack, watching a favorite TV show or movie, etc. Moderation is key in enjoying anything in life, and when you practice self-control you will start enjoying things even more because you deny yourself from time to time of the things you really love, gaining a deeper appreciation of them. Plus, it will prevent you from becoming addicted to things that normally are enjoyable but could potentially become harmful if you over-indulge or abuse them. Really loved the positive & peaceful vibe at the end of the video, by the way!

It’s good to go camping for a while and escape the constant search for stimulation that modern life has become.

*Self Control is a process like with anything else. You need to deliberately practice it* 🙏

I recovered from 11 years of eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia) with "accidental" intermittent fasting (meaning that I didn't consider this practice as a diet or a lifestyle shift) The result was a total recovery and my relationship with both food and my body has been perfect ever since. Lately I lost appetite and haven't been eating much and the former me would have fallen into anorexic behaviours, probably followed by bulimic crises after a time. But I've been just great. I have the biggest energy and mental clarity before I actually eat my first meal of the day (I usually eat only once). This practice taught me patience, self control and self consciousness. I hope my message helps anyone who struggles with eating disorders or have terrible eating habits.

Avoiding food for even 24 hours is a fantastic habit to form.... Intermittent fasting on a daily basis is another effective practice

Thank you for this video - I had an interaction with a nasty customer yesterday who nearly made me cry, but I will learn to not take these negative interactions personally through Stoicism and self-control.

I find stoicism really hard. I can do all the external stuff. I fast regularly, take cold showers in winter, I train physically hard and I'm not attached to material wealth. However, it's the devils in the mind that I struggle with. I've been through a series of abusive relationships that really tested me. It's a constant struggle to maintain a state of calm. Sometimes I win but sometimes I lose and when I lose I go off the rails. I drink smoke and am crippled with depression, anger and rage. The rational part of my brain sees it but I'm overwhelmed by my emotions. The words of great stoics don't cut the mustard when I'm in those states. Like a storm I have to ride it out. I fear it may destroy me in the end.

These words of the Stoics are very wise but like any wisdom can be problematic to implement. Why am I complaining, when a very busy guy like Marcus Aurelius, who had much on his plate, lived the Stoic life? I never lived the meditative life until now at 73 yr old. As I look back at all the wisdoms, like Henry David Thoreau's, "most men lead lives of quiet desperation, "
it is hard not see my life as a workaholic was programed into me by nature and nurture. I can talk about the rationalization of responsibility for duty, honor, family, and country but in the end it comes down to how we judge ourselves. I have finally come to a realization that the only truth each of us can achieve is that of the self and even Buddhism tells us that is, "anatta."
