I lived in the Midwest almost all my life- born and raised. There was one particular day that I was driving through an area of Wisconsin and decided to stop my car just to stand and contemplate the lake and for the first time I was able to listen intently to the cracking of the ice. It's a memory I'll never forget.

If youve ever lived in Chicago and been lucky enough to be next to lake michigan when this happens - its LOUD. You can hear all the ice crack and its super awesome.

One of the most incredible things to date is the ability to see long term effects of different events in a matter of seconds and minutes. It's taken for granted the abilities and technologies of the modern day

My family used to go on hikes right to the edge of the ice growing up in Chicago. Sometimes massive waves would hit the ice wall splashing freezing water on to us. I realize now why we were the only family out there.

Imagine being in a boat and seeing that massive island of ice cruising towards you?

I've never seen something like that in my life and I have ever touched snow before either, watching this is amazing for me

Beautiful time lapse, first the sudden split, but especially the swirling at the end. Wonderful!

As a Brazilian I've never seen snow, and although I love playing with ice and semi-frozen water from my refrigerator, this scares me a little.

This will be recommended to a whole bunch of people 5 years later.

This is a gorgeous timelapse video! Great Lakes ice is always dangerous, even in the coldest of winters. The Great Lakes truly function much more like an ocean than a lake.

If you look at this video in a certain way, it looks like the city is moving away from the ice rather than the other way around.

I have to wonder if the large initial split is all one piece and whether or not there was a terrifying yet satisfying sound when it happened.
