'Running out of homes': Poilievre says Conservatives would cap population growth

The leader of the opposition Pierre Poilievre stated during a press conference on Wednesday that the Conservatives — if they win the next election — would cap population growth so it doesn’t exceed the number of homes being built in Canada.

“You can't grow the population faster than that unless you're going to have worse housing shortages. So we've been — under Trudeau and the NDP — we've been growing the population by almost three per cent, but we grow the housing stock by 1.3 to 1.4 per cent. No wonder we're running out of homes. That's not even a question of whether you support or not immigration. It's a question of whether you support mathematics,” Poilievre said.

Canada’s next federal election is slated for Oct. 20, 2025 if the NDP don’t trigger an early election before that after they ended their supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals.

Live in Mississauga, there are some houses on my street that have 10 families living in them. The houses are not even up to code. The windows in the basement are not large enough for the toddler living there to squeeze through. If there was a fire, they would have no way out.

The main issue with Immigration is the loop hole where provinces have PNP, people come easily through that, land in that province and after 2 days drive to Toronto and clog the city. If this can't be controlled then why do they have Provisional nominee programs...

Trudeau was following the policy made by Dominic Barton (former Global Head of McKinsey) to grow the Canadian popoulation to 100M...thats nearly 3x more than today's population. All countries with high standards of living have low population...its a basic concept...less people sharing the pie. Scandanavian countries dont govern their countries better, they just have a small population hence each citizen has access to more of the countries GDP. Thus Canada should not chase population growth.

capping population growth sounds a lot worse than just saying reducing immigration to levels Canada can grow with without over burdening our social infrastructures. schools, hospitals, a place to live. you know very important aspects of society that over immigration cripples
