How To Use 3D LUT Creator

3D LUT Creator is probably the most powerful and sophisticated software available for working with color. Blasphemous as it may sound, it's more powerful than Photoshop. However, most still photographers haven't heard of it because it has mainly been used in the video world. Nonetheless, its power has been designed to be equally harnessed for still photography. One problem, however, is that its documentation is, in my opinion, not particularly clear and there is precious little training available for the software.

My goal for this video series is to generate interest in the software (I have no financial association or affiliation) and, if there is interest, provide a series that will clearly teach and explain how this remarkable software can be used in conjunction with Photoshop to help achieve one's artistic vision in still photography.

My goal in this introductory video is to explain what a LUT is, to describe the various versions of the software that are available so that you might be able to better determine which one is right for you, and to take a brief tour through 3DLC itself.

If this is of interest to you please do subscribe and turn on notifications so you don't miss the next video in this series! I appreciate your support.

If you have this software or have an interest in it and would like to learn more about it, do feel free to let me know in the comments. Do you find it useful? Would you like to learn more about how to use it? Do you think it would be useful in your still photography?

Where to begin... The narrators of the other 3D LUT videos demonstrate an impressive command of the English language. However, I, for one, and I should note that I'm from New York, can't hear as quickly as they speak. In normal conversation, their Russian accents would sound charming. However, there is a reason why auctioneers are not noted for their presentation of unfamiliar technical information, even in Russia. I can only imagine what it's like to create the closed captions for those videos. You, Mr Grill, present at a pace even slow-witted Americans like me can keep up with. You utilize Goldilocks diction, lying in the sweet spot between ignoramus and British. I am confident I'm hearing and understanding every word that comes out of your mouth. Well done, Mr Grill. Well done.

MERCI for your help. The creator's basic tutorials are difficult to understand when you start. The flow of the voice is fast. There are many videos not specially classified in a logical order... MERCI ENCORE

Amazing!! I’ve searched for more tutorials other than the ones from the creator! Great job!

Hi Howard. Thank you for the pace at which you are introducing this amazing program. The pace you go at allows me to play with images of my own and to learn just not watch as I go through the videos. One segment is enough - although I have watched three in a row today - it is amazing the confidence I have with the program in just a short time. Excellent work.

finally someone giving a in-depth tutorial on this amazing but rather complicated software. Thank you and please keep digging in!

Wow. That looks really interesting. LUTs are such an interesting way to manipulate color. And, yes, that totally is video color grading brought to stills.
Thanks for sharing this.

I've had 3DLut Creator for a couple years now and have watched probably every video on their official YT channel, but your tutorial explains each tab more clearly and concisely than anything I have seen from them. The issue with their videos is that they seem to focus on showing the use of the software but they do not explain WHAT each step they take actually does. Subscribed to your channel and watching your other videos now. Thanks for posting.

Thank you Howard. That was a great introduction. I had run the website videos and downloaded the demo version when I found this video. I will definitely run your whole series of videos before proceeding further and have subscribed to your Blog.

My initial interest in 3D LUT Creator is for colour digital infrared photography. Most people just do a channel swap or not even that and essentially end up with two colours. I am interested in creating a surreal image including extracting a full range of colours as appropriate. This can be tricky. I have been using various methods in Lightroom, Photoshop (potentially with TK Actions) and Capture One but 3D LUT Creator looks very different and very powerful.

Later I might consider subtle changes to conventional images.

I would love more tutorials. I just bought this program a while ago but I don't feel like I'm using the program to its full potential because of the lack of tutorials and content.

Hi Howard. Instructive video! Is it a stand-alone software or a plug-in? Is it compatible with Filmorapro and Davinci Resolve 17?

Howard, yes interested. I took a course by Jim W which was great but would like another perspective and see it used in more workflow situations.

I'm considering buying this tool to make Lightroom or Capture one profile that would render the same colors as film. I'm looking for a "scientific"/accurate method to create this with a color chart and film scans of said chart shots. Not sure how I could achieve it in 3DLut. It may be possible if 3DLut could allow me to create a LUT to go from accurate/close to real life color on my digital camera (with the calibration color chart, it's pretty easy) to the color chart colors I get on the film scans. Ideally, I'd end up with a LUT that would emulate a combination of a specific lens/film combo from digital images taken with a given body and lens combo... Do you think it would be possible to use 3DLut to get that kind of LUT?
