Yoga Amrit Desai Stress The Silent Killer Stress. When you learn to change your breathing patterns you will change your physiological pattern from a fear based or stress based response to a relaxation response. Yogi Amrit Desai demonstrates a powerful technique that can quickly move you from a stress-based state to a state of relaxation and stillness.

Yogis have used techniques such as Quantum Breath to move from doing to being. You don't try to solve the problems by going outside but moving to the inner stillness within.

Technique: cover your eyes momentarily- breath in slowly through the nose, then exhale 12 staccato breaths - withdraw your attention inward - very slowly inhale again…repeat 3 times- then breathe slowly and deeply for 5 minutes then repeat.

I have deep respect for Gurudev Amrit Desai. In this video, it is clear that he is demonstrating Kapalbhati, pronounced kapaala-bhaathi. Kapala refers to the head in Sanskrit, and from a similar greek word, Kephalae, the medical word that refers to the head is derived: Cephalic. Kephalic in British English. Cephalgia means headache. Kapaalgia in Sanskrit..just kidding! Bhaathi is often referred to as "shining." But from a translation of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by the Bihar School of Yoga, Bhaathi means light or splendor, also can mean perception and knowledge, depending on the circumstance.

Anyhow, Kapalabhati is great for head cleansing, sinus cleansing, and can be invigorating. When I feel stressed, I resort to slow, relaxed, belly (diaphragmatic) breathing. I find it SO relaxing and meditative. Just attention to the belly breath and relaxing at the same time, surrendering, letting go, is the heart of Zen meditation. If I deepen the belly breath, (but not too deep) it helps me greatly with hyper-acidity and acid reflux.


However, in full deference to Gurudev, if he advises Kapalabhati for stress, then surely people can give it a try. It does not work for me, however.


The greatest contribution of Gurudev to Yoga is the concept of spontaneous Yoga, where the inner/greater consciousness guides our yoga practice. People have seen light radiating from him while doing yoga practice. I have found that great relaxation helps in this. Which is why I so dislike the rigidity of so many yoga teachers; with such teachers I feel like I've joined the military!

Imagine a woman whose husband passed away suddenly and she has to work and look after 2 young children without any family support...the only way for her to cope long term is get help ...relaxation and breathing techniques can only do so much

I just tried this. Not even sure I did it right (does one engage just the throat or the diaphragm as well?), but it had a very, very calming effect. When I went to the website, they only offer trainings for yoga teachers. I wish they would offer an online program for folks who just want to learn meditation for home use.

I feel that all these techniques do help, but leaving maladjustment with spouse as it is, won't help much...
kapalbhati, anulom-vilom etc are great tools. But unity of the purpose and knowhow for that is far more important.
Life is an art of living, establishing loving atmosphere at home should be the highest priority.

Sir, source can be husband too...I don't like the fact that you mentioned wife only as source of stress in the beginning of the video. You are speaking for men only, what about women? They have most stressful life.

I wonder all these advisers are oldies; they seem to give advise to youngsters. I am sure this Desai was a rotten in his youth and it took decades before he can give this advise. Giving advise is easy
