Symmetric and Anti-symmetric Wave functions
Показать описание
What are symmetric and anti-symmetric wave functions ?
When two quantum particles, like electrons are exchanged, no experimental setup can determine that such an exchange has taken place. This is because all quantum particles are identical, that means, they are all indistinguishable. This leads to certain interesting phenomenon.
Since two electrons in two distinct wave function states are identical, so, therefore the probability distribution of the two-electron setup is exactly identical after if any exchange of electron takes place.
This leads to the possibility of two kind of general wave function solutions: symmetric wave functions, and anti symmetric wave functions.
Symmetric wave function solutions are shown by a certain class of particles, known as BOSONS, and they do not follow the Pauli's Exclusion principle.
Anti-symmetric wave functions are followed by another class of particles, known as FERMIONS, that do follow the Pauli's Exclusion principle.
In this video, I show, how the existence of anti symmetric particles in the case of identical particles can lead to the Pauli's Exclusion principle.
