Tensions soar in the Taiwan Strait as China conducts its “punishment drills” near the island nation. The drills are seen as a response to Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a “dangerous separatist”. China launched these drills just two days after Lai took his oath of office. Recently, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV released an animated video depicting a missile strike on Taiwanese cities. The exercises are also seen as a warning to the US, which supplies Taiwan with military aid.
