------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear friends and followers welcome back to my channel. Today's video is very much addressed to my flight students, as we'll be looking at the question, what is a VOR, how does it work and what a VOR has to do with a Lighthouse?

VOR stands for VHF omnidirectional range. I know I haven't made it any better. VHF stands for very high frequency, which makes a VOR only a short-range radio navigation system, so in line of sight, VOR`s are receivable from 25 NM up to 140 NM useable radius.
Line of sight meaning, if there's a mountain between you and the VOR, you will not receive a reliable signal even though you are within the station's range.
Omnidirectional comes from the Latin word omni which means, all or every direction, meaning the VOR sends out 360 lines, let's call them lines for now, which can be picked up by a VOR receiver. In today's video will use a CDI, Course Deviation Indicator with an OBS a Omni bearing selector which is very common in your standard Cessnas, Pipers etc.

Now a common question by the FAA. Are VOR's aligned towards true north or magnetic north? Magnetic north, as you can clearly see on the compass rose around the VOR. If a VOR would point to True north it would always point in the same direction on the chart, as standard charts are oriented towards true north.
But if you compare the Hay River VOR in Northern Canada with a magnetic variation of 16 degrees and Ottersberg VOR with 3 degrees you know VORs are aligned towards magnetic north.
But actually, the answer is both, because some of the VORs in the far north of Canada are aligned with true north, but that's a whole video right there about that topic!

See more in the video!

Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

Your "Captain" Joe

BIG THANK to the DFS for their permission allowing to fly with my drone over their VORs ! Highly appreciated!

You spread positivity just by talking, even if you're talking about VORs.
You're truly a good person.

Police: "so how did you happen to be on that line?"
Joe: "Just doing a video about VORs"

Preparing for my instrument exam. This is one of the best VOR navigation explanations I’ve ever seen. Thanks CJ! ✈️ 🇨🇦

The fact that he did the line demonstration on the crowded Autobahn A9 cracks me up. I sure miss Munich!

I'm a student at the KLM flight academy. I didn't understand the difference between the non-directional beacon and the VHF omnidireactional range. Then I found this video. Thanks for the good explanation! Keep up the good work :)

That analogy with the lighthouse and the stop watch makes a LOT of sense, I wish I heard that explanation when I did my training....

Hi Capt. Joe. You explained VOR better in 10 min, than my avionics (repair) instructor did in 8 hr. of classroom time. Cheers!

You just gotta love this bloke. Thanks for explaining it, I had a generel sense of what the VOR is, but now I think I truly understand it.

The travel lane explanation of the CDI needle, is perhaps the simplest I have ever heard about the way the needle functions. Good nugget to take away there!

Hey Captain Joe. I am a regular follower of your YouTube channel and I'm not even a pilot. If you did not possess such a passion for flying, you could be a motivational speaker. Your communication skills, personality and sincerity already qualify you for the job. If you retire from flying, I would like to encourage you to consider this.
