Surgical scalpels are actually made to not be so sharp, as the cleaner a cut is the longer it takes to heal. The “ragged” edge a scalpel incision leaves on tissue allows the wound to adhere together better and therefore heal faster. IIRC most razor blades are sharper than scalpels.

Scalpels are made to slice, not to be pressed down like that

These sharpness testers have almost no significance to any medium these tools would be used to cut. It’s a wire, not flesh, fruit, or anything else that people use a knife to cut

I feel like this dude watched 3 knife videos then went and bought the sharpness tester and has no idea how to use it 😂😂😂

Has to do with tensile strength. Metal on a surgical blade is soft bc it only cuts flesh, nothing ever harder than the blade. The wire is harder than the blade. So more pressure has to be used to cut the wire. Obsidian is harder than the wire, so the edge of the blade doesn’t “squish” as easily

Obsidian Scalpels are typically used for extremely precise cuts during plastic surgery. While these cuts take longer to heal, they also develop far less scar tissue - something absolutely essential in many cases (eg: eye surgery, facial reconstruction surgery, etc.).

With any material the sharper the edge the more fragile the edge. Edge angle determines not only sharpness but how long it lasts. A very sharp edge is not a robust edge and would quickly dull as it will quickly roll over (metal) or chip (obsidian/glass/cermanic).

Scalpels are sharp enough to do their job without being too fragile at doing their job.

You came in on the wire retention tester at an angle with the scalpel. That will easily add 30-70 on a BESS. Do a true controlled experiment and do them both the same way multiple times lol. There’s no way cheapo Amazon utility blades are way more sharp than a medical scalpel.

Is sharpened obsidian done with a belt or a break

Surgical scalpel should be more consistent across the bladd, while obsidian will have different sharpness every section i would think.

Just taking uninformed guesses

it is 100% going to be sharper, but the issues are mass production, how sanitary it is being that it occasionally leaves behind obsidian particles when cutting, attaching than to handles, and the availability of obsidian vs steel.

Can someone explain how the machine works? It looks like the wire breaks so do you need a new one every time or what?

Did you try polishing the apex? Had a cheap folding knife sharper than my razor just by polishing

That's a common misconception. Scalpels cut well mostly due to their blade profile, not how sharp they are

You do also have to remember scalpels and obsidian scalpels are meant to be pulled backwards while cutting to help with cutting my adding friction to it instead of being pushed straight down into it

When I first saw people using those wire sharpness testers I didn’t know there was a wire and was confused as shit lmaooo but now that I know there’s a wire it actually does make sense and is a very clever idea!

Its the way the skin tares to the scalpel, underneath a microscope a scalpel is like a knife puncture jagged an sloppy, a obsidian blade gives it a perfect seemless cut. You wont use a bread knife to cut stake . Same thing. A pressure plate cant tell you

When I did dissections in anatomy class it was so unsanitary and horrible, the dissections were fun but the scalpels were so dull it felt like I was cutting a piece of carpet

neither of these are really like impressively sharp. they’re both really sharp don’t get me wrong, but if you know what you’re doing you can easily sharpen a regular pocket knife with a much much thicker blade to well below a score of 100 on this machine. i’ve seen huge fixed blades meant for outdoor use with convex edges score as low as 70-75. surgical scalpels for normal surgery aren’t meant to be like a laser beam when they cut though. because first off a super super super clean and sharp edge that would give you the super low scores on this and be scientifically ‘sharper’ (aka have a thinner apex) will actually be less effective at slicing cuts (which is what scalpels are made for) than a slightly duller but still incredibly sharp blade since the duller blade will have more of the micro serrations on the edge meaning they’ll bite into skin more readily
