My Kitchen Essentials:

Welcome to the dad days! My content will be a little bit of everything: sourdough starter and homemade bread baking, DIY home projects, mens clothing staples, cooking for my family and turning leftovers into something new. Just a few things "The Dad Days" are filled with.

Video Recap:

You’re aiming to use a small amount of flour and water here, and just build on this original batch every day. There’s no set weights or measurements here, you’re actually just going for consistency. Think pancake batter, and shoot for that thickness.

Continue to feed your starter once every 24 hrs until you have a bubbly active starter.

I’ve had this active starter for the better part of a decade, but it shouldn’t take you more than 1 to 2 weeks to get an active starter yourself.

The reason that this is a no waste no discard method, is that I keep the starter in the refrigerator between uses. If I know I’m going to be making bread, or pancakes, or anything, I get it out the night before or the morning I will be using it to feed it. Depending on the temperature, it takes anywhere from 1 to 6 hrs to become active and able to use in a recipe, so I just plan accordingly.

Once active again, just use a cup or so, re-feed the starter, give it 30 mins to an hour, and pop it back in the fridge for another week.

That’s it! Store it in the fridge in-between uses, get it out and feed it when you want to use it, and feed it before putting it back in the fridge.

I hope you are able to use this method for yourself and start making and baking some great sourdough items. If you haven’t checked out my sourdough bread video yet, click the link at the end of this video.

OMG - You made my life so much easier. I've been trying to make the starter for months and without success until I tripped upon your YouTube video. I can't thank you enough. All the best to you.

Hi- liked and subscribed. I have had several mind boggling days of watching overly complex videos about making sourdough starter…. I joined Facebook groups where it seemed people were in competition over the “science” of sourdough starter. My parents were from the old country of Germany and my mom and my grandmothers… going way back - they all baked only sourdough! I’m sure they didn’t have time to waste over the “science” of starter! All that to say- THANKS for this common sense and easy video. Going straight to my kitchen to whip up some starter now!

I got my starter in the fridge last evening, in a glass bowl with a paper plate covering it. I will let you know when I get it bubbling!!

Also, do not use anything metal for your starter either. The natural yeast will react to the metal and cause problems with the starter as well as giving an off taste of metal like. Do not stir with a metal object like a knife or spoon, etc. Glass is best and plastic or rubber stir item, like a spatula. I usually do equal amounts of water and flour though.

I thought you had to add yeast to make a starter. This is so easy…except the patients needed…1-2 weeks 😆

How do you maintain it? Like you take some out for recipe - but then what? Do I need to replenish then or what? Thanks!

How long will it last in the fridge ? If your not using it while it's in the fridge for extended periods do you feed it ? I'm just starting down this rabbit hole ( and it's intimidating right now) but am excited to find great advice to be successful ! Thanks and have a good day sir !

nice and simple, appreciate the video! i'm going to experiment with using the liquid leftover in greek yogurt (whey) for water on the first round and see if it gets my starter going faster. the first 2 weeks, are you keeping it in the fridge or does it spend those 2 weeks at room temp?
